Col. Dudley's Campsite
This section of my page features a couple photos of the site where Col. Nathan Dudley and his troops made their camp on the day of July 19, 1878, the final day of the Five-Day Battle. At that time, the site was merely a vacant lot with a half-completed adobe wall on the western side, giving Dudley and his men shelter from the fighting that was happening primarily in that direction. Today, there are a couple houses that stand on the old site.
Dudley's Campsite
This image gives a close-up of the historical marker that stands at the campsite. It reads: "Col. Dudley's Camping Place. Encamped a few yards away on July 19, 1878 were U. S. troops from Fort Stanton. Allegedly brought to protect lives and property, their presence quickened Murphy party [sic] into firing McSween's residence and pillaging the Tunstall store."
