On the left is the often-published, only-known-photo of Alex McSween, believed to have been taken in Kansas around 1870. It has been badly faded and retouched over the years, reducing the photo to a near sketch and skewing many facial features. On the right is the photo from Sallie Chisum's collection, depicting a man showing many similarities with McSween, most notably the distinct mustache, the narrow eyes, and the receding hairline (McSween was said to be nearly bald by the time of his death).
