The Wortley Hotel & Restaurant
This section of my page contains photos of the Wortley Hotel & Restaurant. During the days of the Lincoln County War, the hotel was owned and operated by Sam Wortley and was a popular place to dine for the town's citizens. During the Five-Day Battle, several Dolan-Peppin men took positions in the hotel in their fight against the McSween forces. On the Apr. 1881 day when Billy the Kid escaped from jail in Lincoln, one of his guards, Bob Olinger, was eating lunch at the hotel. After hearing the Kid's shot that mortally wounded his other guard, James Bell, Olinger left the hotel and ran across the street, into the courthouse's yard, where he was himself ambushed and killed by the Kid. Today, the Wortley remains a popular restaurant in town as well as a three-room hotel.

This image depicts a wax sculpture of Dep. Bob Olinger that sits in the dining room of the Wortley, showing him much as he would have appeared on the day he was killed. Note the image of Billy's famous tinytpe on the wall behind him.
