Growing up in poverty-stricken Suicide Slum, young Lex Luthor's dangerously brilliant mind was already working to find a way out. At age fourteen, his parents were killed in a mysterious auto accident, which conveniently left Lex a large inheritance and the chance to be the youngest student to ever enter MIT. The aggressive young inventor amazed all his teachers, graduating in just three years. The money he soon made from patenting his inventions made him a billionaire by age twenty. Anyone who got in his way was crushed and swept away.
To keep up a benevolent front, Luthor donated millions to Metropolis, buying the city hospitals, parks, opera houses and art museums, all named for him. He brought industry and prosperity to Metropolis, eventually employing two-thirds of the city's work force among his many companies. Buying the city's love and loyalty, Lex Luthor became the undisputed master of Metropolis and lord of all he surveyed.
But when Superman appeared, the populace began to forget about Lex Luthor. Unable to control or own the Man of Steel, Luthor became obsessed with destroying him instead. Becoming a victim of his own evil schemes, Luthor was poisoned by kryptonite radiation and driven mad. Exposed as a criminal mastermind, Luthor lost his vast empire and was forced to go into hiding. A fugitive from justice, Luthor now spends his days plotting his revenge on both Superman and his allies in the Justice League.
