Attending a police-men's masquerade ball, police commissioner James Gordon's niece Barbara Gordon was dressed in a costume patterned after the one worn by the vigilante protector of Gotham City. Witnessing the villain Killer Moth ambushing Bruce Wayne, she rushed to Wayne's rescue. Discovering she enjoyed the thrill of danger, Gordon dedicated herself to battling crime as Batgirl.
However, Barbara Gordon was forced from fighting crime on the streets to fighting it behind a keyboard and monitor after a gun shot by the Joker left her paralyzed. She currently battles crime by assisting other crime fighters as the information broker known as Oracle.
