To four-year-old Bruce Wayne, the labyrinthine limestone caverns beneth the Wayne Estate were a place of fear. One day he stumbled and fell into one of these grottoes. He remained trapped with the hundreds of bats nesting there until his father descended into the darkness to rescue him. As an adult, Bruce returned to the cave to establish a subterranian sanctuary for his own bat-inspired alter-ego. Hidden beneath Wayne Manor, this highly-equipped, multipurpose “Batcave” served as the perfect headquarters for the Dark Knight to wage his cladestine war on crime!
Access to the Batcave from Wayne Manor was through a concealed dorrway behind the grandfather clock in Bruce Wayne’s study. Turning the clock’s hands to 10:47 - the exact time Bruce’s parents were murdered - opened the hidden passage.
In the aftermath of the earthquake that decimated Gotham City and razed the original Batcave, a redesigned headquarters reflects a new era in the Dark Knight’s crusade. The rebuilt complex utilizes the cavern’s height to greater advantage, with eight separate level now making up Batman’s underground refuge. Amid limestone stalactites and stalagmites, retractable walkways bridge multi-tiered structures, including an “island” computer platform with seven linked Cray T932 mainframes and a state-of-the-art hologram projector. Similar hi-tech updates to training facilities, forensics laboratory, library and vehicle access have made this re-imagined Batcave a more formidable garrison than ever before.
