Attending a police-men's masquerade ball, police commissioner James Gordon's niece Barbara Gordon was dressed in a costume patterned after the one worn by the vigilante protector of Gotham City. Witnessing the villain Killer Moth ambushing Bruce Wayne, she rushed to Wayne's rescue. Discovering she enjoyed the thrill of danger Gordon dedicated herself to battling crime as Batgirl.
After an earth quake cut Gotham City off from the rest of the United States, Huntress attempted to maintain order, but found that criminals did not fear her as they do the Batman. With Batman missing in action and desiring to capitalize on the fear that criminals have for vigilantes wearing the bat motif, Bertinelli crafted a costume, and for a time fought to maintain order in the no man's land that was Gotham City as the Batgirl.
Cassandra was trained from an early age to become a deadly assassin. She is essentially mute because her "father" David Cain only trained her to communicate through the language of violence. For her to fight is to speak. Residing in Gotham City during the No Man's Land crisis, the girl with no name took on the identity previously held by the Huntress as the latest Batgirl.
