For killing his son by suffocating him in a sphere filled with air instead of water, a grief-stricken Aquaman squeezed Black Manta's rebreather tubes shut to end his villainy forever; however, Black Manta begged for the kind of mercy only a king could grant.
When their conflict continued as before, Black Manta beseeched the devilish Neron to turn tide in his favor. Transformed into a true undersea creature befitting his namesake, Black Manta sank to new depths of depravity, until Aquaman, once more granting mercy, fished out Black Manta�s submerged humanity and restored the villain to normal with a healing hand. Unfortunately, Black Manta has always swum against the current, an ability now enabled by genetically modified gill slits. Time and tide will tell if the villain has finally reached the limits of Aquaman's dwindling mercies or if Black Manta plans a whole new wave of maritime mayhem.
