At an unknown location, a group of international supervillains gather at the behest of the Black Glove, represented by Dr. Simon Hurt, the man responsible for the isolation chamber experiment that nearly ended Batman's career and for the creation of the three replacement Batmen. They are planning a danse macabre for Batman and arrange the delivery of an invitation to the villainous Joker.
A large game is being played by the Black Glove and the Club of Villains, which Doctor Simon Hurt is leading in their campaign against Batman. After one of Le Bossu's gargoyle henchmen drugs Batman with librium on the blade of a knife, members of the Club of Villains converge on the Batcave.
Upon hearing of Batman's "return", Simon Hurt prepares to move his base of operations to Arkham Asylum. Hurt orders Jezebel Jet brought to the asylum, along with several large boxes of the Joker's poisonous black and red flowers. Le Bossu, still dressed as Dax, informs the Joker, whom he refers to as "maître" (or "master"), that everything is ready for the "dance of death".
