All that can be said about this film is that it’s a typical Disney movie. But I must give this movie a slight bump due to the fact that Heather Matarazzo was cast in the film (not only is she a great actress, but she adds a comic flare to the movie).

The movie is about a 15-year-old girl, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), living in San Francisco who just wishes to be invisible. A few weeks before her 16th birthday her grandma (Julie Andrews), whom she has never met, comes to give her a surprise and an early birthday gift- she is actually a princess and is the next in line to rule Genovia. She now has the choice to stay with her mom as a normal teen or become a princess.

Despite the Disney appeal, the movie had numerous humorous moments. Mia’s best friend, Lilly (Matarazzo), adds the comical relief by having a cynical outlook on life. Mia’s ‘bodyguard’, Joesph (Hector Elizondo), adds comedy as well. The best moments are when Mia is in her stereotyped school and the "popular" kids are showcased, Lana (Mandy Moore) and Josh (Erik von Detten) are the ringleaders. Another humorous touch was the schoolteachers (from the principal who wishes to be a princess to a feisty gym coach played by Mindy Burbano). I’d have to say that Burbano’s character was a pleasant adding, mixing humor with sarcasm.

I personally think if there were more moments with Mia and her schoolmates it would have been a way better film. Although the movie seemed to drag on, overall the movie wasn’t as bad as I originally thought. Would I see it again? Maybe. But I know that people should at least give it a shot due to the numerous standouts (Matarazzo, Burbano, Moore, and Hathaway).
