Butterflyfish Chaetodontidae

Butterflyfish are some of the most beautiful colourful reef fish found along with their cousins, the Angelfish. They can be easily distinguished from Angelfish as Angelfish have a SPUR under each gill plate (See Angelfish page).

The family in general is diurnal and many species feed on coral polyps, but may include algae, polychaete worms, crustaceans, sea urchin feet.

They occasionally occur in groups, but mainly in pairs and sometimes individually.

The Red Sea has 7 endemic species of butterflyfish out of a total of 14.
