A Covenant With Death

The American Colonies began with a document called the Mayflower Compact. It was an agreement between Christian settlers and God when they came to the New World.

In this document, which was a binding covenant, the settlers promised to live for God and honor Him alone. Even during the American Revolution several centuries later, American patriots would yell in battle as they fought the English, "We will have no king but King Jesus!"

Despite attempts at historical revisionism to say otherwise, The United States of America was founded upon a covenant with God. A covenant is a mutual agreement where two or more parties make agreements that will benefit each other. There is a mutual submission sworn to each other for a greater cause.

Consider this sober warning from Deuteronomy 4:31 "He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them." God promises to not forget the covenant our forefathers made with him. And He is honoring our covenant. He promises in his Word, Psalms 9:17 "The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God."

Does it surprise you that even news commentators are wondering why this nation seems to be going "to hell in a handbasket?" It is because we have forsaken and forgotten God. The economy is great - so is the abortion, suicide, and murder rate.

America has entered into a new covenant, a covenant with death. We are now the most bloodthirsty, murderous generation to ever live. We do not value the life of the old, the young, or the unborn. We kill millions of unborn babies for the sins of their parents, the old, and the feeble. Suicide is the number 3 killer of people between ages 15 and 24. Death rules in America!

Heed God's warning to the nation that makes a covenant with death. Isaiah 28:15 "Because you have said, 'We have made a covenant with death, And with hell we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.'" These people were mocking God by declaring that Death, the last of God's enemies to be destroyed, was their friend and protector.

God's reply to those who covenant with death is in Isaiah 28:18. "Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Hell will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it." The Lord decreed that our covenant with death is self-consuming.

We sacrifice our kids on the altars of pleasure and prosperity and have created a generation of fatherless kids often filled with rage, arrogance, and a hunger for attention. "Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die"is the mocking refrain. And the killings continue as the bonds of our national covenant with Death grow stronger; as the blood of the innocent flows. More will die until we acknowledge that we have sinned and dishonored the covenant our forefathers.

We have all but removed God from our national life. Perhaps we need to re-mint our coins to read: In Death We Trust. Or we can plead the blood already shed at the Cross and ask that our Death covenant be annulled by the stripes of Christ. Only He can heal this nation that is surly bleeding to a premature death.
