The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America Page 49 Descendants of John Benedict. "-- pictos ostendere vultus majorum." JUVENAL. 1. JOHN2 (Thomas1), born at Southold, L. I., removed with the family to Norwalk and married Phoebe, daughter of John and Sarah Gregory(*) of that town, Nov. 11, 1670.(+) He was a freeman of Norwalk in 1680, and succeeded his father as selectman in 1689. He was a selectman in 1692-94 and '99; and also held some minor civil appointments
Page 50 in the town. He was occupied, however, mainly, with church affairs, having become Deacon, probably, upon the death of his father. Thenceforth the records show him to have been constantly on committees having charge of the religious and educational interests of the community, now "obtaining a minister," then, "hyering a schoolmaster." In 1705 the church honored him by voting him a sitting "in ye seat before ye pulpit." He served as representative in the General Assembly in the sessions of 1722 and 1725. The date of his death is not to be ascertained, nor is that of his wife. The volume of probate records, which probably covered the time within which they died, unfortunately, is missing. He conveyed property to his sons James and Joseph of Ridgefield, in 1722 and 1723; and that he was living in 1727, is thought to be certain, because his son is then referred to as Deacon John Benedict Junior. "In 1708 he and other inhabitants of Norwalk purchased a large tract of land between that town and Danbury. The purchase was made of Catoonah the chief sachem, and other Indians, who were the proprietors of that part of the country. Deed bears date Sept. 30, 1708. At the Norwalk town session, 1709, it was ordained that it should be a distinct township by the name of Ridgefield." (Trumbull, p. 460). James was also one of the original settlers of this township. Fence-viewer in 1715, called Ensign, 1719, afterwards Captain, and, 1737, Esquire. He was appointed justice of the peace for Fairfield county, Ct., May, 1732, and was reappointed annually until 1733. He was representative for Ridgefield, from May, 1740-45, and 1748-1752. He was the first to write the genealogy of the Benedict family. In his youth he lived with his grandmother, Mary Bridgum, wife of Thomas, page 52 and she delivered to him, from her own mouth, the genealogy down to his own memory, and he reduced it to writing. His Genealogy of the Family of the Benedicts, dated March 14, 1755, has been the foundation of all the subsequent ones. His grandson, Abner Benedict, a member of the junior class in Yale College, made an exact copy of it, June 23, 1768. James was the second Deacon of the church in Ridgefield, till old age and its attendants rendered him unable to serve. He sustained the character of a pious and exemplary Christian. His death occurred Nov. 25, 1762. The following inscription is on his gravestone in Ridgefield. Here lies interred the body of James Benedict Deacon of the first Church of Christ in this town; Together with Sarah, His Wife Who, after having served their generation According to the will of God, fell asleep and were gathered to their fathers, the first on Nov. 25. 1762 in the 77th year of his age; the other, February ye 9th, 1767, in the 81st year of her age. Ch. 6. Capt. THOMAS3 (John,2 Thomas1), b. 1682, Norwalk, Ct.; m. 1705, Millison, dau. Thomas and Mary Hyatt of that town. Thomas Hyatt was active and brave enough in the Indian wars of his time to incite the town to make to him a grant of land as a testimonial of its gratitude, and a requital of his services. Millison, b. Dec., 1686, was twin-sister of Sarah, who became the page 53 wife of Dea. James3 (5) Benedict of Ridgefield. Thomas appears to have possessed a strong desire for military distinction, together with so much aptitude for affairs of that character, that during his whole life, he was never without some military rank. He comes before us as "Sergeant," in 1713; as "Ensign," in 1724; as "Lieutenant," in 1742, and as "Captain," in 1746; this latter title adhering to him for the rest of his life. It is very evident, however, that civil position was not distasteful to him; for he was chosen selectman not less than seven times, and moderator of the annual town meetings at least ten times; the last occasion being the year preceding his death. He was representative in the General Assembly, probably in 1737 and 1740, and certainly in 1744. He exhibited the family tendency to do service in the church. Dec. 2, 1724, the town desires him "to sett ye tune to ye Psalme, at such times as that part of service is to be performed in ye publik worship of God; and to read ye Psalmes needed; ye town, also Seat ye said Bennedick in ye 3d long seat at ye end of ye middle alley." The power of his voice must have been something remarkable, for it is stated on credible authority that he could be heard and understood at the distance of more than a mile. It is probable he was a Deacon of the church (Congregational) of which he and his wife were members (1725), but the loss of the church records prevents certain knowledge on this point. His will bears date May 20, 1763, and was proved July 5, 1763.(*) He died, of course,
Page 54 in the interval between those dates. His wife survived him, but the date of her death is not known. Ch. all b. in Norwalk.--(See Hall's Hist. Norwalk, Ct., pp. 113, 114, 125.) Ch. EBENEZER, m. Thankful -- and moved to New Canaan; was admitted I. Phoebe, bap. Oct. 21, 1733.

Assembly, Oct., 1762 His house and barn were burned by the British in 1779. The following obituary notice of him was written by Hon. Roger Minot Sherman: "He died at Norwalk on the morning of the 2d of April, 1806, after a shock of the palsy, with which he lingered about twelve days, in the 90th year of his age. On the 3d his remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of friends and relatives, among whom were his twelve(?) surviving children, and many of his more remote posterity. He has left ninety-one grandchildren and eighty-eight great-grandchildren, the whole number of his descendants, now living, being 191. For about thirty-two years he sustained the office of Deacon of the First Congregational church in that town. Deacon Benedict was one of those venerable personages by whom what remains of the pious habits of our forefathers, have been transmitted to the present generation. His long life has been eminently exemplary, and years to come will feel its happy influence. Every morning and evening witnessed his devotion. His sabbaths were faithfully appropriated to public worship and religious family instructions. An amiable, cheerful disposition, a sound mind, improved by a good degree page 59 of reading, and much reflection, and adorned with a bright constellation of Christian graces, comprised his character. At his funeral an appropriate sermon was delivered by Rev. Dr. Burnett, from Prov. xiv, 32. "The wicked is driven away in his wickedness; but the righteous hath hope in his death." Ch. Aug. 20, 1779, there was a meeting of church members residing in Upper Salem, Cortland's Manor, and other places adjacent, to consult as to the expediency of organizing a church. Peter Benedict was chosen moderator of the meeting. Peter Ferris, the husband of his dau. Hannah, was also present. On the 25th of the same month a church was organized, and Mr. Benedict was chosen Deacon. His two sons, Joel and Abner, were the first pastors of that little flock. His sons were all men of education. Abner grad. Yale college, and Joel, Nassau Hall. Peter entered Yale, but did not graduate, leaving to join the army, the family all being ardent whigs. He d. in 1787, aged 73. His wife d. in 1802, aged 88. A short time before his death he wrote a brief paper of exhortation to all his children of a most affectionate and devotional character, closing with his prayerful blessing, which is evidence of his real character and of the light that shone on his declining years: "Oh! Thou most blessed Being, Thou sovereign Disposer of Thine own mercies and blessings, I beseech Thee to bless these instructions, and bless my offspring to the latest posterity. And bless this society, and most gracious Sovereign bless this church, this little flock. Build it up in faith, love and kindness. And, oh! May 8, 1740, Mary Blackman of Green Farms, Ct.; m. 2d, Jemima --; became a member of the Baptist church, Stamford, Ct., and was licensed by that church to preach the Gospel. Having received a call to become pastor of the church at the new settlement of Warwick, Orange Co., N. Y., he removed to that place, and was ordained Nov. 17, 1766. Some time during the troubles of the war of the Revolution, he removed to Wyoming, Pa., and was, with his family, among the sufferers from the fearful massacre of the inhabitants of that place by the tories and Indians under the notorious Brandt. His influence and character as a preacher with the Indians, protected himself and family from personal injury at their hands, but his property was mostly lost or destroyed. After suffering great hardships he returned to the town of Warwick in the year 1777, where he resided until his death, Sept. 9, 1792. His wife died some time previously, and he had m. 3d, wid. Bross, who survived him, but of this third marriage there was no issue. His remains, and those of his first wife, rest in the old Baptist burying-ground near the village of Warwick, but no monument marks their graves. Their descendants form a numerous and highly respected portion of the citizens of Orange county. The memory of the "old Elder," as he is familiarly spoken of, is held in great esteem and veneration by the community at large, as well as by the church of which he was pastor. The following is an extract from its records: "Those who knew him, and yet survive, hold his memory in great respect, and say that it is blessed." Ch. b. Ridgefield, Ct. MARY, b. March 31, 1741; m. He was justice of the peace, 1777-1804; member of the legislature in 1755, '56, '59, '64, '77, and 79; was fifth Deacon of the church in Ridgefield, and officiated many years. We learn "that his mother meant him for the gown, but he chose another dress." Mr. S. G. Goodrich, in his Recollections (p. 223), thus presents the portrait of Deacon John Benedict: "He was a worthy old man, and enjoyed many claims to respect. He was not only a Deacon, but a justice of the peace, and respected the law, especially as it was administered in his own person. He was severe upon those who violated the statutes of the state, but one who violated the statutes of Deacon John Benedict, committed the unpardonable sin. He was the entire police of the meeting-house on Sunday, and not a boy or girl, or even a bumble bee, could offend, without condign punishment." He d. July 9, 1814. Ch. b. Ridgefield: ESTHER, b. Salem before 1776, and finally settled at Patterson, near the close of the last century. Here he became a member of the Presb. church, and held the office of Deacon for many years. During the Revolutionary War he performed considerable service in the American army. He served at least one enlistment in the Continental army, in the campaign of 1777, on the northern frontier; but the most of his service was rendered in the county of his residence (Westchester). Living near what was then called the 'lines,' or 'neutral ground' between the British army in N. Y. city, and the American armies in the interior, they were constantly in danger from the raids of the British army, and the depredations of 'Cow-boys,' as they were called. He belonged to a company of organized militia, called 'minute-men,' who were obliged to be in readiness to march at a moment's notice, and in this capacity did much service. He was a member of the guard over Major AndrŠ, during a portion of the time of his confinement, trial and execution." For some time he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War (pensioner); held several public offices in the community; for fifty-nine years a member of the Cong. church, and an efficient Deacon in the same for thirty-six years. He possessed great meekness and gentleness of disposition. His deep interest in the welfare of his country, and in all that appertained to the prosperity of the cause of the Redeemer, led him to make willing contributions, both of his money and services, to the cause of Christian benevolence. The poor found in him a steadfast friend, and to the church he was both an ornament and pillar. Both his corporeal and mental powers remained unimpaired till almost the close of his honorable and useful life, and his end was peace. He d. He studied theology with the celebrated Dr. Bellamy
Page 86 of Bethlehem, Ct., and was licensed as a Congregational clergyman. He preached as a candidate for settlement on Long Island, and in Connecticut. In 1771 he was ordained and settled in Middlefield, a parish in Middletown, Ct., and remained there about fourteen years; and, during that time, by his address and efforts, he procured the emancipation of all the slaves held by his people. During the war of the revolution, he was a genuine and consistent whig. He left his people temporarily to act as a chaplain in the army. He was one of the last in the retreat from Long Island, and was in the battles of White Plains and Harlaem. In 1785 he obtained a dismission from Middlefield, Ct., and was next settled at New Lebanon, where he was installed June 8, 1786. He was, at his own request, dismissed in 1791, his salary being greatly in arrears, the balance œ642 13s. not having been paid until May 19, 1794, as appears by a receipt on the books of the trustees. From New Lebanon he removed to North Salem, thence to Poundridge, and thence to North Stamford, Ct., where his wife died. From North Stamford he removed to Parsippany, N. J., thence to Roxbury, where he died Nov. 19, 1818, aged 78. His fourth wife (wid. Sawyer of Cobleskill) survived him. In the history of Middlesex Co., Ct., he is described as a man of strong and benevolent affections, and an intelligent and able divine. He left behind him some manuscripts, the result of great labor, particularly the one on the Book of Revelations. An ingenious essay on Melchisedec, left by him in manuscript, was published in one of the earliest numbers of the Christian Spectator. He also left some philosophical and mechanical tracts on the tides and winds, and on submarine navigation and attack, exhibiting a profound, ingenious and careful intellect. He was a man of remarkably clear, well balanced and philosophical mind, and of thorough education. He was offered a professorship in Yale College, but did not accept it. The following is the inscription on his gravestone: Sacred to The memory of The Rev. ABNER BENEDICT. June 20, 1831, at Newburgh. "He was graduated at Princeton, 1765, and pursued theological studies with Rev. Dr. Bellamy. He was ordained pastor of Newent Soc., Lisbon, Ct., Feb. 21, 1771, and dismissed for lack of support, May 1, 1782. He then removed to the vicinity of his native place, and preached as he had opportunity, till, in Aug., 1784, he was invited to a pulpit in Plainfield, which had then been nearly seven years vacant. Here he was installed Dec. 23, 1784 -- the sermon from his brother, Rev. Abner, of Middlefield parish. The ministerial rate having been given up, his support was provided for by funds and subscriptions. It was eked out by labors as an instructor in academical and theological studies. There Mr. Benedict served a long and happy term of ministerial service, winning to himself much esteem, not only among his page 88 own people, but throughout the country. In 1808 he received a Doctorate in Divinity from Union College, and, in 1814, the same degree from Dartmouth College. He was highly reputed for piety, knowledge, and prudence, and was especially thought a proficient in his acquaintance with the Hebrew Scriptures. His manner of preaching is described as quiet and moderate, chiefly extemporaneous, and full of good instruction, but not fitted especially to arouse the careless. He died Feb. 13, 1816. A monument reared by filial affection among the graves of his attached people, commemorates his virtues. A funeral sermon from the text, "A great man has fallen in Israel," by Rev. Samuel Nott, D. D., was published. Dr. Benedict is not known to have published anything except a sermon preached at Dr. Levi Hart's funeral." Cong. Zuar., July, 1860. Stephen Lockwood. "His early years were spent at Norwalk. After preparatory study at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., he entered Yale College, and pursuing the usual course, graduated in 1822. The year following he taught school in Virginia. Although for some years in feeble health, he determined to devote himself to the ministry, and pursued a theological course under private instruction. He commenced the work of the ministry at Waterbury, Ct., in 1826. The following year he preached in Galway, where he received a cordial request from the Congregational church in page 125 Norwalk, Ct., to become their pastor. Accepting the invitation, he was installed Aug. 12, 1828, and continued there four years, amid scenes of great religious interest and fruitfulness. Impaired health compelled him to resign his charge and visit the south. On his return, he labored a short time in the church at Somers, in 1833. In October of that year he accepted a call from Lansingburgh, where he remained two years. After which, declining permanent engagements, he preached (1836-7) at Covington, Ky., where he founded a church; afterwards (1838) at Stillwater, then at the Broadway Tabernacle, N. Y.; also, at the Bowery church (1839). Leaving New York, he accepted a call from the Congregational church, Westport, Ct. (1840), and remained there twelve years. Resigning this charge, he spent about a year in Europe (1852), and on his return was settled over the Presbyterian church at Portchester, where he continued until 1863, when advancing years induced him to lay aside his duties as pastor. He continued to reside at Portchester, ministering occasionally there, and in neighboring churches, until his decease, which occurred at Saratoga Springs, July 18, 1868. The foregoing is a brief record of a useful life, held in grateful remembrance in many households where the fragrance of his loving words and deeds still lingers." A funeral discourse was preached in the Presbyterian church, Norwalk, Ct., by B. F. Munday, the pastor, from I John, iii, 2. He removed, in the winter of 1822, from Manchester, Vt., to the town of Perry, and may fairly be considered one of its pioneer settlers. Following the business of teaching winters and managing a small farm during the summer, the while maintaining correct habits, he soon won the confidence and esteem of all with whom he became acquainted. He was elected to various minor town offices; in 1834 was chosen supervisor, and continued as such for twelve or thirteen years. Sept. 6, 1772, at Middletown, Ct.; m. Jan. 1, 1795, Currance, dau. Deacon Adin Wheeler of Southbury, Ct., b. July 6, 1772. "He studied law with Thaddeus Benedict, Esq., of Reading, Ct., and was admitted to the bar of Fairfield Co., in 1794. He continued in the practice of law six years, first in Stamford, and then in Branford; and during this period, 1796-1801, was Chaplain 25th Regt., 5th Brig., 3d page 140 Div. of the Ct. Militia. His views changing, after preparatory theological studies with his father, he entered the ministry as a Presbyterian clergyman. He preached his first sermon Jan. 15, 1802. His first congregation was that of Blooming Grove, Orange Co., where he was ordained as an Evangelist, Nov. 16, 1803. From that place he was called to an adjoining agricultural parish (Bethlehem), in the township of New Windsor, where he remained four years. He was next settled over the church and congregation in Franklin, Del. Co., where he remained about eight years, when he was called to New Concord (Chatham), Columbia Co., and was pastor of the Presbyterian church there till, having been repeatedly attacked with bleeding at the lungs, he was forced to abandon the continued active duties of his profession, and was employed by the Pennsylvania branch of the American Tract Society in Philadelphia, where he remained till his death, occasioned by the bursting of a blood-vessel, October 21, 1833. He was buried in Laurel Hill cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa. Eager, in his History of Orange Co., says of him: 'Mr. Benedict was a man of ardent piety, untiring zeal and eloquence, which continually drew crowds to listen to his preaching.' He sometimes left his people and preached as a missionary in the counties of Broome and Chenango, and the neighboring ones of Pennsylvania. The same result followed his preaching in those sparse settlements as elsewhere. The inhabitants flocked to hear him, and were deeply affected. He was almost constantly in the midst of religious revivals from the time he entered the ministry till his health failed. He was active and influential in the Northern Associate presbytery, where he was intimate with Rev. David Porter of Catskill, Rev. Seth Williston of New Durham, Rev. David Harrowar of Sydney, who in the beginning of this century, were the great apostles of the region lying west of the Hudson, and about the head waters of the Delaware and the Susquehanna. There was nothing ornate or rhetorical in his language or manner. He was simple, earnest, clear, and persuasive. His sincerity, sympathy and feeling were irresistible. It was said of his preaching 'the word melted hearts like wax before the fire.' His few published sermons fail to exhibit Page 141 his power over an audience, because they lack the expression of feature, voice and manner. In all the ministrations of his sacred profession, his manner was very solemn and impressive. In social life, and in his family, he was cheerful and humorous, and abounded in anecdote and repartee. The following extract from a newspaper notice of his widow suggests the influence she may have exerted upon her husband and children. 'She was eminent during her long life for her earnest and practical Christian spirit, the brightness and activity of her intellect, and the vivacity and attractiveness of her disposition. In labors of love for the poor, the sick, and the ignorant, she abounded. To the old, the middle-aged, and the young, her society was alike, ever delightful. Her children and all who knew her rose up to call her blessed. The vigor of her mind was not weakened, the warmth of her love was not chilled, nor the benevolence of her hand checked by her advanced years; and to a remarkable extent her bodily strength remained till her last sickness, which was of but few days' continuance.'" She died June 4, 1862, in the 90th year of her age, at Huntington, Pa. Ch. 270. GEORGE WYLLYS, b. Jan. 11, 1796, at Stamford, Ct. 151. Rev. ABNER6 (Rev. Abner,5 Peter,4 James,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Feb. 13, 1781, in Ct.; m. Jan. 1, 1802, Nancy, dau. Capt. Phineas Farrand of Hanover township, N. J., who d. Jan. 12, 1831. "He received his classical and mathematical education chiefly under the guidance and instruction of his father. Removing, about 1800, to Parsippany, N. J., with his father, he taught, for a few years, academies, successively in Hanover, Springfield and Newark. In 1807 he removed to Franklin, Delaware county, where he studied theology under his father, whom he had accompanied, and under his elder brother, Rev. Joel T., who was then pastor of the Congregational church at that place. After receiving his license, and preaching a year in Cicero, he removed to Sherburne, where he remained three or page 142 four years as pastor of the Congregational church. The remainder of his days he devoted with great zeal and eminent success to the arduous and self-denying labors of an Evangelist. His preaching was singularly practical and searching. His doctrinal sentiments were those of St. Paul, as interpreted by Calvin. Revivals of religion almost invariably attended him whereever he went, and he did much to build up and strengthen, in their infancy, the early churches of Western New York. He was ardent in his feelings, genial in his social intercoure, tender and indulgent in all his family relations, as a lover of man and a lover of God. He died Dec. 25, 1830. Dr. Penney, his friend, and one of the ministers of Rochester, and subsequently president of Hamilton College, preached his funeral discourse from the text 'Our fathers! where are they? and the prophets? do they live forever?' The Rev. Dr. Joel Parker of New York, under date of March 12, 1870, described his friend and colaborer, Rev. Abner, 'as a little less than of a medium stature, of a compact frame, quick in his motions, as indicating a degree of nervous sensibility. His mental characteristics were peculiar, while his modes of thought were chaste, as indicating mental culture, he was distinguished for accuracy of statement and sharpness of discrimination. He was peculiarly a doctrinal preacher, and a high Calvinist. He was a very bold preacher, and an able debater. He was, at times, too, very pathetic, especially at the communion service. His discourses were not considered as eloquent throughout; but they were always replete with sound thought, often marked by passages of great power, delivered in a manner which I was always inclined to characterize as intense. With him true piety was first, and learning next. These were all -- godliness and mental discipline.'" Ch. 274. FARRAND NORTHROP, b. March 11, 1803, at Parsippany, N. J. Page 143 PHINEAS, b. May 27, 1789, at Voluntown, Ct., and d. April 27, 1868, at Philadelphia, Pa. Soon after becoming of age he lived at Albany, where he was a clerk and an assistant of Rev. Dr. Nott, then in charge of the academy there. Thence he went to Central New York, and about 1801 opened a store at Sangersfield, Oneida Co. The Annals of that county mention him as an early settler, and notice the fact that "Esquire Benedict was said to have been very much of the gentleman both in his manners and style of living." He lived for a few years after his marriage in Madison Co., but his home may be said to have been Richfield Springs, where he spent more than thirty years in the occupation of a farmer. His declining days were passed at Chester, Pa., where his children had settled. He d. Nov. 6, 1855. He was Deacon of church at Richfield Springs, and ruling Elder of Pres. church of Chester at the time of his death. The Richfield Springs Mercury, noticing the death of Mrs. Benedict, said: "She lived among us but to do us good, and to illustrate the excellence of those Christian graces which eminently adorned her character." He was ordained in 1816 as a minister of the Baptist denomination, at Sherburne; thence he removed into Chenango Co., where he preached two or three years. Afterwards (1819) he moved into the township of Riga, Monroe Co., bought a small farm partially cleared, and commenced farming, preaching on Sundays over a circuit of some twenty-five miles with much success. He was a logical reasoner and a ready extemporaneous speaker. In his theology he was a Calvinist of the strictest sort, and preached what he believed to be the truth in the face of all opposition. He removed in 1832 to Michigan, under the appointment of the Baptist Home Mission Society, where he labored as a missionary, making long journeys page 145 on horseback, and undergoing many hardships and privations in visiting the new settlements, gathering churches and preaching to the destitute. About 1845, his health failing, he ceased his active labors, preaching only occasionally, and writing for the press. He d. March 18, 1851, at Oakland, Mich. His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Bennet (Presb. minister, and a warm friend, who sympathized strongly with him in his theological views) from the text, "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace."--Psa. 33: 37. He graduated at Union College, class 1810, and having chosen the medical profession (in which he afterward became eminent), he settled in Millbury, Mass., where he married, and died suddenly of disease of the heart, Jan. 17, 1847. He was a man of most genial disposition, of superior intellect, and like the long line of his ancestry, sustained an exemplary Christian character, and was an active member for many years in the church of Christ. Rev. Samuel G. Buckingham of Millbury, delivered his funeral sermon: he spoke of his eminence as a physician; of his tenderness and delicacy in the sick room; of his sympathy when the case was beyond medical skill; he commended Dr. B. as a citizen, reciting his interest in the public weal, his wise administration as a magistrate for many years, and his good counsel in town affairs. He spoke, also, of him as a kind friend, charitable in thought and action, as a Christian of rare piety, and as lovely in all his domestic relations. Ch. WILLIAM, b. Oct. 6, 1828; d. Oct. 21, 1828.
