He received his earlier schooling in the public schools at Westfield and Providence, and completed his studies at a private school in Springfield. He was about eleven years old when the family came to Providence. After leaving school he entered the employ of his father, and in time was taken into the partnership as before mentioned. Mr. Huntoon retired from active business in 1895 after a successful career, and was succeeded by his sons, Harrison B. and William C. Huntoon who have very efficiently carried on the business, which they incorporated in 1901 under the firm name of The Huntoon and Gorham Company, confining themselves to the manufacture of cigars..... William Huntoon was much interested in Masonry and was one of the best known members of the craft in the city. On May 8, 1860 he became a member of What Cheer Lodge, No. 21 A. F. & A. M.; of the Providence Chapter, R. A. M. Oct 24, 1872; of Providence Council No. 1, R. & S. M. a short time later, Nov 26, 1872 he became a member of Calvary Commandery, No. 13, Knights Templar; he also belonged to all the Scottish Rite bodies, reaching the thirty-second degree. Although Mr. Huntoon had been in poor health for a number of years, his death finally came quite suddenly Sept. 15, 1903. Mr. Huntoon had a wide acquaintance, and he stood high as a businessman as well as in the estimation of his fellow men. ¹⁸⁷⁸

Clarice August Gates was my grandmother, and when I was born, she made for me a family tree. Fifty eight years later, I got it out, and idly typed some of the names into my computer. Within a few minutes, I discovered four generations of ancestors listed by my grandmother, living together in 1850 Western New York. Later, and with less ease, I would discover the ancestors of the strangest name on my grandmother's list, that of Isaac F. Huntoon, and many other cousins of that name.
The census of 1920 and 1930, below, show the presence of Clarice's daughter Olive Loraine Lapham, my mother, who still lives at the time of this writing.

At 18 she married Dr. Fayette Montrose Weller, the first physician of Evanston. The couple later moved to Chicago where was born their only child, Charles Frederick Weller, who subsequently was engaged in the bureau of charities. Mrs. Weller was active in unostentatious philanthropic work in Evanston, Chicago and later, in Washington D.C. Besides her son, three grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters survive her. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jenkin Lloyd Jones at 2 p.m. in the main chapel, Rosehill Cemetery, Tuesday, April 11. ²²⁸⁰
