Notes for JOSIAH HUNTOON:

Chronology of Josiah Huntoon (from Allan F. Abrahamse):

[Mrs. Amos G. Draper, New Hampshire [Revolutionary War] pension records, 101 volumes, (1918-1933) (Typescripts in the DAR library, Washington, D.C.), W16031. His testimony was in support of the application of Judith, Caleb's widow, for a pension.]

• 25 May 1775, in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire Revolutionary War record: In 1838, Josiah Huntoon testified that he enlisted from Unity with Caleb Huntoon.

[Isaac W. Hammond, State of New Hampshire, Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War, Vol. 1 (Manchester: John B. Clarke, Public Printer, 1889), pg. 113.]

• 12 Jun 1775, in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire Revolutionary War record: Age 18, he is a member of Capt. Philip Tilton's company. Caleb Huntoon's name appears on the same list, immediately above Josiah's name.

[Isaac W. Hammond, State of New Hampshire, Rolls of the Soldiers in the Revolutionary War, Vol. 2 (Manchester: John B. Clarke, Public Printer, 1889), pgs. 23-30.]

• 2 Jul 1777, in Ticonderoga, Essex Co., New York Revolutionary War record: Listed as a private, with his brother Charles, on the "Pay Roll of Col Benjamin Bellows's Regiment of Militia in the State of New Hampshire which Regiment went & reinforc'd the Garrison at Ticonderoga when besieged by the Enemy in June 1777. Time of engagement June 28th." He was in Captain Amos Shepard's company.
• 9 Jul 1777, Revolutionary War record: He was discharged from Capt. Wilcox's company.

[U.S. federal census, New Hampshire, 1790 (printed version), 25. He is the only man named Josiah Huntoon known to have been alive in 1790, and he moved to Unity as a teenager, and died there in 1848.]

• 1790 census in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire: Josiah: 14-2.

• 25 Dec 1792, in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire: Witnesses the will of his uncle, Capt. Nathaniel Huntoon.

[U.S. Federal Census, 1800, roll 20, page 302. This census record says the head of the household was Josph Huntoon, but nobody named Joseph Huntoon is known who matches the record. On the other hand, Josiah Huntoon was town clerk of Unity for many years, and Josiah's name does not appear anywhere else in the 1800 census. The known household composition of Josiah's family in 1800 exactly matches this census record. Four girls all under the age of 10 is an unusual combination.]

• 1800 census in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire: Joseph: 12210-41010.

[U.S. Federal Census, 1810, roll 23, page 234.]

• 1810 census in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire: Josiah: 10101-01301.

[Virgil D. White, Genealogical abstracts of Revolutionary War pension files (Waynesboro, Tenn.: National Historical Publishing Co., 1990-1992), S17947. Testimony for Charles Huntoon's pension application.]

• 19 Dec 1837, in Unity, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire: "...Kingston was my native place and I resided there until about 14 years of age, and then removed to Unity, where I have resided about 65 years."
