Herendeen Family

The information on the Herendeen Family is from "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" by John O. Austin, 1887 (1969), pp. 95-96, and "Harrington Family Genealogical Gazetteer" by George H. Harrington, 1941. The Herendeen Family is one of the old families of Smithfield, R.I., moving north from Providence in the late 1600's.

Herendeen, Benjamin

The surname Herendeen is identical with Herenden, Harandine, Harnden, Harrenden, Harraden, Haraden and Harrington, and there are various other variations in spelling. A Richard Harnden settled in Reading, Massachusetts. He was born in 1640. Edward Harnden settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, about 1650, and afterward removed to Gloucester; was over fifty years old in 1677. There was a Benjamin Harndale or Harnden in Lynn in 1649.
Benjamin Herendeen or Hearnden, the immigrant ancestor of all the early Rhode Island families of this surname, was born probably in England and settled at Providence, Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth White. who died about 1701, daughter of William and Elizabeth White. After Herendeen's death in 1687, she married (second) in 1688, Richard Pray. Herendeen bought of William and Elizabeth White, of Boston, for twenty pounds, a house and lot of twenty-five acres in Providence, October 16, 1662, and in the same year he sold rights to certain lands to Zachariah Rhodes. He drew lot 86. February 19, 1665, and in 1684 he had sixty acres laid out to him. He and his wife deeded land to their son Benjamin. April 20, 1685; and to their son Joseph sixty-seven acres, March 3, 1686. His will was presented April 4, 1688, but it has been lost. The widow, then wife of Richard Pray, deeded to son Isaac the homestead given her for life by her late husband, October 20, 1688. But on December 13, 1701, the dwelling house formerly her father's, she deeded again, Isaac having conveyed it to her again.

What evidence is there for Sarah Tillinghast, born 1654, dying in 1671?
See below, from a post I made to the Harrington (Herendeen) family forum:

Most sources (1-4) have not identified the family for Sarah, the wife of Joseph Herendeen. Some recent research has apparently raised the possibility that Sarah was a daughter of Reverend Pardon Tillinghast of Providence. This suggestion was passed on to me by email from Tillinghast researcher Todd Lawrence on April 12, 1999.
When Joseph Herendeen died intestate in 1694, his widow was unable to procure bondsmen for herself and her young children. The court ordered Pardon Tillinghast "to have some oversight and be some assistance to said woman, and for the ordering and tuition of her said children"(5). Pardon Tillinghast and his first wife Sarah Butterworth had a daughter named Sarah born November 17, 1654 (6), but a Tillinghast genealogy states that she died in 1671 (6). No reference was given for this daughter’s decease however and I have not found one in the Providence vital records. If there turns out to be a death or burial record or other documents noting her decease then Sarah Tillinghast cannot be Joseph Herendeen’s wife. On the other hand if Sarah’s decease is a case of "no further record after 1671" then this identification becomes quite plausible, as Joseph Herendeen married about then. Sarah would have therefore disappeared from the records as Sarah Tillinghast about the same time Joseph’s wife appeared as Sarah Herendeen. At the time of Joseph Herendeen died Pardon Tillinghast was among the political leaders in Providence and was therefore available to be assigned to oversee the affairs of an indigent widow without any family connection, but this responsibility would seem more likely to have been passed on to another family member if one were available. There are numerous Herendeen relatives nearby, some presumeably in prosperous circumstances, and there is no evidence that Joseph Herendeen and his wife were not on reasonably good terms with them. Seemingly the only reason they would be passed over would be for a maternal relative, in this case [if the assumption is correct], Pardon Tillinghast.
Sarah is not mentioned in the will [proved Feb. 15, 1718] of Pardon Tillinghast (7), so if she was Joseph Herendeen’s wife she had died prior to that date. Pardon did leave each grandchild 5 shillings, but did not name or number them (7).
