Notes for VERA KATHLEEN MYERS:

[Personal Recollections by Steven R. Lusk on 19 August 2005:]

Aunt Vera lived with her sisters Marie and Ruth in Marshall, Michigan when I was growing up.  When our family lived in Indiana, we made many trips to visit family in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area.  We would stop in Marshall a couple of times per year and visit "Aunt Marie, Aunt Ruth and Aunt Vera."  They were the nicest ladies and always had candy, cookies, cakes and milk for me and my brothers.
They came and stayed with me and my brothers in Indiana once when my parents went on a week long trip.  I remember it so well, because they made homemade fudge that I can still taste.  It was a very happy time.  I miss them now.

Heather L. Newkirk, 16, was driving south on LaPlaisance Rd. south of Carlisle St. just after midnight when her car traveled left of center and onto the east shoulder of the road, according to sheriff’s deputies.

MONROE TOWNSHIP — A Monroe teenager died in a one-car traffic accident on LaPlaisance Rd. early this morning.

Heather L. Newkirk, 16, was driving south on LaPlaisance Rd. south of Carlisle St. just after midnight when her car traveled left of center and onto the east shoulder of the road, according to sheriff’s deputies. The car re-entered the roadway and then flipped over into a ditch. The teen was ejected from the car.
She was the granddaughter of Jerry Held, president of the Monroe Sport Center, and worked at the bowling alley, a family business that extended through five generations.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, deputies said. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department and ProMedica Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
This was the 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 25 deaths at this time in 2004.
The crash remains under investigation by deputies Brian Quinn, Stephen Yeary and Timothy George of the traffic services division along with Deputy Douglas Bender, Jeffrey Kemp and Sgt. Joseph Higham of the road patrol division.
Anyone who saw the crash or has information pertaining to the investigation is asked to call 240-7493 or 240-7560.
