To his son Thomas, his houses in Herwych [Harwich, co. Essex], to him and his heirs forever. to his son Robert, a trunk. To his four daughters, 10 (Pounds). To John Fletcher, his part of the quay in Herwych, he paying the testator's executors 40s. Executors: His wife Christian Merveyn, his son John Merveyn, and Thomas Grey. To his son John, his house at Bridge with all the lands thereunto belonging and [lands at] Kent in the Soken, to him and his heirs forever. Witnesses to this nuncupative Will: John Cuko; John Rande; Water Hunt; Reynold Edgar, bailly of Herwych; George Hasketh; Thomas Doye; Lawrence Yong; William Pyeree; Emme White; John Perdryche. Proved, 11 April 1504, by John Wro, proctor to the executors (P.C.C., 5 Holgrave)."
Pg 4.
"1. Thomas Mervyn...may by a bare possibility have been the son of Robert Mervyn of Ipswich, co. Suffolk. It will be noticed that the testator of 1503 named a son Robert. This suggestion is, however, of an extremely tentative variety, for there is no proof at all of this identification. Thomas Mervyn was obviously a man of considerable subsistence."

by the Institute of American Genealogy. Each volume has a section in the main
body of the work, complete in itself, entitled "Immigrant Ancestors," containing
much genealogical information: vol. 1, pp. 965-997; vol. 2, pp. 387-421; vol. 3,
pp. 645-692; vol. 4, pp. 727-777; vol. 5, pp. 741-793; vol. 6, pp. 749-819; vol.

been reprinted. Thus that 1964 reprint list is the only one appearing in no.

facts on birth, ancestry, time and place of arrival on this continent, marriage,
and death of each immigrant that it includes. A more complete list of immigrants

Notes for DEBORAH MATHER:
"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), page 170."
Deborah Mather was a descendant of Rev. Richard Mather, the father of Increase Mather, President of Harvard College, who was the father of Cotton Mather. (Marvin Gen., p. 34.)

He was born Abt. 1650 in Southold, Long Island, Suffolk County, New York546,547, and died 1717 in Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut548,549,550.
Notes for MARY MARVIN:
"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), page 365."
The Marvin Genealogy does not mention Mary among the children of Matthew,2 but, as there was but one family of the name among the early settlers of Connecticut, and as I find in vol. V, p. 267, of Norwalk Deeds that property is recorded Feb. 15, 1722-3 to "Lieut. Daniel Benedict of Danbury on ye accompanyment of his brother, Matthew Marvin, deceased," I conclude that she was the daughter of Matthew2 Marvin. (See Hall, p. 181, and Marvin Genealogy.)
Compiler's note:
The following is incorrect as it pertains to the
Marvin Genealogy. Mary is mentioned as Matthew Marvin's daughter on page
301. I present the following:
"George Franklin Marvin and William T.R. Marvin, Descendants of Reinold and
Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Connecticut, 1638 and 1635 Sons of Edward Marvin of
Great Bentley, England, (Boston: T.R. Marvin and Son, 1904), pages 299-301."
3 MATTHEW,2 son of Matthew1 and Elizabeth Marvin, baptized 8 Nov., 1626, in St.
Mary's Church, Great Bentley, England; died in 1712, in Norwalk, Ct. He came
with his father in the "Increase." He married, probably about 1650, Mary (???);
she was living 28 March, 1707, at which time he made deeds of gift of all his
estate to his sons Samuel and John, providing for her support; she probably died
about 1709. He left no will, and the deeds mention only his daughter Hannah and
a child of Elizabeth: they cover several pages in Norwalk Land Rec. (IV: 155 et
seq.) He was in Norwalk certainly as early as 1651-2, and perhaps was one of the
"thirty approved families" mentioned in the Agreement, 19 June, 1650, with Roger
Ludlow, then of Fairfield, Ct., though not named in that document. .........
....... Children, born in Norwalk, but not recorded there, and order uncertain:
10. i. Matthew,3 b. abt. 1656.
ii. Mary, b. abt. 1658; m. Daniel, son of Dea. Thomas and Mary
(Bridgman) Benedict, of Southold, L. I.
He was living in 1723, as a deed (Norwalk Rec., V: 267)
dated 15 Feb., 1722/3,(+) speaks of "Lieut. Daniel Benedict
of Danbury, on ye accompanyment of his brother Matthew
Marvin deceased." He was a soldier in King Philip's war,
and took part in the "Direful Swamp-fight," 19 Dec., 1675,
for which he was granted 16 Feb., 1677, by vote of the
town, three parcels of land. He sold his Norwalk lands 25
March, 1690, and removed to Danbury, where he resided
until his death. Matthew2 bought his house and home-lot,
about five acres, and gave it to his son Samuel.3
Children (Benedict), order uncertain:
1. Mary,4 b. (???).
2. Daniel, b. (???); m. Rebecca, dau. of Thomas and Rebecca
(Ketchum) Taylor, of Danbury (Selleck, 378). His will, made 26
March, 1762, was proved 5 Aug., 1776. Rebecca was aged 98 when
she d. (Selleck, 229).
3. Mercy, b. (???).
4. Hannah, b. (???); prob. m. Nathan Taylor, bro. of Rebecca
above, who by Selleck is said to have been 100 when he d.

Notes for SAMUEL BENEDICT:
"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 241-242."
1. SAMUEL2 (Thomas1), was born 164-. He continued to reside with his father until after his removal to Norwalk, Ct. There he married, first (unknown), by whom he had Joanna and Samuel. He married, second, July 7, 1678,(*) Rebecca, dau. of Thomas Andrews of Fairfield, Ct., by whom he had five children, the last two born in Danbury, Ct. In the fall of 1684 and the spring of 1685, he, with his brother James, his brother-in-law James Beebe, Judah Gregory (brother-in-law of James Benedict), and four others, purchased land of the Indians and made the first settlement at Paquiogue (Danbury).(+) Dr. Samuel Wood, who married Rebecca, dau. of Thomas1 Benedict, soon followed, and Daniel, youngest son of Thomas1 Benedict, also, settled there, soon after 1690. Thus it will be seen that the majority of the first settlers of Danbury were of the Benedict stock and connection. "They soon built a little church, only forty feet by thirty; when its frame was raised every person in the town was present and sat together on the sills." Samuel Benedict, a Deacon of the church, while a resident of Norwalk, was also first Deacon of this church. He conveyed his Norwalk property, Feb. 3, 1685. He is named as patentee in the patent of Danbury, granted by the General Assembly, May, 1702.(*) His will, made at Danbury, April 15, 1719, was recorded March 20, 1719. His inventory, made April 17, 1719, shows a total of œ185 11s. 5d. The will mentions wife Rebecca, Samuel (eldest son), to whom is bequeathed "my great Bible;" Samuel Benedict, son of Thomas Benedict, "my second son, deceased" who received "my martir book;" two youngest sons, Nathaniel and Abraham; heirs of Thomas Benedict, "my second son, deceased," "as one child," [i. e., to take as one child,] and Benoni [to take] "half so much as one child." It, also, mentions daughters Rebecca and Esther.
(*) Samuel Benedict bought in 1678 a home lot upon Dry Hill, 4 acres. Hall, p. 28.
(+) "They [i. e., the first settlers] lived near together, at the south end of Town street; the two Benedicts on the east side." Robbins's Century Sermon, p. 9. "The house of Mr. Samuel Benedict, at the south-east corner of the street, and the house of Rev. Mr. Shove, were, in the early part of the century, placed in a posture of defense against the Indians. When they were apprehensive of danger, all the families used to repair to these two houses, especially nights." Robbins, p. 11.

Notes for LIEUTENANT DANIEL BENEDICT:
"Henry Marvin Benedict, The Genealogy of the Benedicts in America, (Joel Munsell, 82 State Street, Albany, NY, 1870), pages 365-366."
1. Lieut. DANIEL2 (Thomas1) Benedict was born at Southold, L. I., 165-, and after his removal to Norwalk, Ct., married Mary, dau. of Matthew2 Marvin(*) of Norwalk, Ct. (Hall, p. 182). He was a soldier in the direful swamp fight, Dec. 19, 1675, a fight which has scarcely a parallel in the annals of ancient or modern warfare. At a town (Norwalk) meeting, Jan. 12, 1676: "The towne in consideration of the good service that the soldiers sent out of the towne ingaged and performed by them, and out of respect and thankfulness to the sayd soldiers, doe with one consent and freely give and grant to so many as were in the direful swamp fight twelve acors of land; and eight acors of land to so many as were in the next considerable service." Accordingly, there was granted by the plantation, as a gratuity unto Daniel Benedict, "being a souldier in the Indian warr twelfe acres of land and lyeth in three parcels." (Hall, p. 63.) He sold his property in Norwalk, March 25, 1690, and moved to Danbury, Ct. The date of his death is not known. He was certainly living Feb. 15, 1722-3. His signature is attached to a deed bearing date Aug. 17, 1717. Norwalk Records.

LIEUTENANT SAMUEL8 MARVIN (MATTHEW7, MATHEW6, EDWARD5, RAYNOLD4 MERVYN, JOHN3, THOMAS2 MERVEYN, ROGER1)568 was born Abt. 1664 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut569, and died Bet. 1754 - 1759 in deduced from Individual Notes569. He married HANNAH PLATT569 Bet. 1701 - 1702569. She was born 15 Dec 1674569, and died Unknown.
Notes for LIEUTENANT SAMUEL MARVIN:
"George Franklin Marvin and William T.R. Marvin, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, 1638 and 1635 Sons of Edward Marvin of Great Bentley, England, (Boston: T.R. Marvin and Son, 1904), pages 320-321."
12 LIEUT. SAMUEL,3 son of Matthew2 and Mary
Marvin, was born in Norwalk, Ct., probably about 1664, but we have been unable
to find any record of his birth, marriage or death. His will, we have been
informed, <!--[Image for Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin]-->
was dated in 1744, but persistent efforts, continued for several years, have
failed to discover it. He was living in Feb., 1744/5, and his son was called
"Samuel, Jr." in 1754, but "Samuel" in 1759. He married about 1701-2, Hannah,
daughter of Dea. John and Hannah (Clark) Platt, of Norwalk, a niece of Sarah,
wife of Lieut. Reynold2 Marvin, of Lyme, born 15 Dec., 1674.(*)
Samuel was one of the appraisers of his wife's father's estate. He was often in
public office; he was chosen townsman 1702, '07, '10, '12, '14,(+) '17, '24 and
'27; he was "Lyster" 1716 and '23; "Survaior" 1719, '21; representative, 1708
and '18; ensign of the train-band 1712 or earlier, and "established and
confirmed Lieutenant of the South Company or train-band of Norwalk" by the
Legislature 19 Oct., 1719.(??) 3 June, 1723, he was on the committee to seat
the new meeting-house, of which his brother-in-law, Joseph Platt, was chairman;
from Feb., 1732, until his death, he lived in Wilton parish. His house in
Norwalk, one of the oldest there, was standing in 1902. By a deed, recorded at
Norwalk 17 Dec., 1735, Isaac, his "loveing son," was given land called "Wolfpitt
Hills,"(*) Matthew, "a portion," Josiah, "land equal to Matthew's." Samuel also
received a gift of land the same day. Josiah was given more land 27 April, 1741,
Isaac, 19 Dec., 1744, and Samuel, Jr., 18 Jan'y, 1744/5; two of these three
deeds Lieut. Samuel signed with his mark, indicating he was then infirm. A very
careful search fails to find a final division of his remaining property.
Children, born in Norwalk (no record found); arrangement based on births of
their eldest children; there were probably others who d. y.:
16. i. Matthew,4 b. Oct., 1702 (1703, by one informant).
17. ii. Samuel, b. abt. 1704 or '05.
18. iii. Abigail, b. abt. 1706?
19. iv. Josiah, b. abt. 1710.
20. v. Isaac, b. 1713.
21. vi. Lewis, b. 1716 (or earlier?).
vii. Joseph, b. abt. 1718.
(*) She is identified by her father's will
(Fairfield Prob. rec., 1702-24: 72), in which she is called "my daughter Hannah
Marvin." The Norwalk rec. has "borne the 15th of Desember, Anno 1674. I say the
fifteenth of Desember, Anno 1674."
The reason for this somewhat emphatic entry does not appear; no record of her
death has been found.
(+) On the record of the town meeting for 11 Dec., 1717, an amusing feat of the
town clerk is shown by a large "Samuel" preceding a brace, which is followed by
the names of Comstock, Betts, Kellogg, Marvin and Raymond,--the Christian name
of each of the townsmen elected that year being Samuel.

188. URIAH6 (Uriah,5 Thomas,4 Thomas,3 John,2 Thomas1), b. Oct. 1, 1765, Norwalk, Ct.; m. 1783, Ruth, dau. Joseph and Sarah (Mead) Rockwell(*) of Ballston, b. Nov. 29, 1763, in Connecticut, and d. Feb. 18, 1801, at Milton. He m. 2d, Feb., 1802, Phoebe, dau. of Benjamin and Phoebe (Rowland) Marvin,(+) b. May 18, 1779, at Lyme, Ct., and d. Sept. 27, 1825, at Albany. The father of Uriah, and his fellow settlers of Connecticut birth, had left their quiet homes and plunged into the wilderness north of Albany. While they were necessarily exposed to all the privations and perils incident to a frontier life in Revolutionary times, the peculiar situation of their settlement was fraught with additional dangers. It was on a natural route to Canada, which inevitably would become a thoroughfare for hostile expeditions from that quarter. This section was, previous to the war, the abiding place of many malignant and enterprising tories, and the fears of loyal men, that these renegades would become the guides of marauding Indians, were more than realized. In 1779, in consequence of an official warning, all loyalists abandoned their homes and repaired to Schenectady. Uriah Benedict's family was among the refugees. An attack was made by Major Monroe and his savages. The inhabitants rallied and pursued the marauders, until met by a captive who had been released, and was charged with a message from Col. Gordon, one of their prisoners, asking that they might not be pursued, because Major Monroe had ordered his men, if attacked, to kill all the prisoners. It is said, that on its becoming known in Montreal that Monroe had given so brutal an order, he was cashiered. Uriah Jr., then in his fourteenth year, probably, was engaged in this pursuit, for his name appears on the pay-roll of that period. He saw service again, in the fall of 1781. He went on foot through the woods to Waterford, a distance of some fourteen miles, and enlisted among the three months men, for the defense of the frontier, then menaced by St. Leger's expedition. Soon after, his father heard that he was seen pursued by an Indian, and was probably killed. After a troublesome journey of seventy miles which Uriah Sr. had made to bring home the body of his son, he found him celebrating some great success of the American arms, probably the surrender of Cornwallis. It seems the son had gained a tree, and consequently an advantage which enabled him to kill his pursuer. After the close of the war he settled down to quiet and domestic pursuits. His great natural capabilities for business brought ample rewards for his diligence and enterprise; the Four Corners in Milton, where he established himself, becoming a nucleus, around which population and industry soon gathered and continued to increase. The hospitalities of his house were liberal to a degree not easily imagined now; and, his charity to the poor was even more generous than his entertainment of the stranger. He was a gentle and amiable man, with tastes befitting rural life. A tender husband and father, he was not less useful and exemplary as a citizen. Leaving Milton in 1805, he, in partnership with Uriah Marvin, conducted a business, in Albany, in West India goods and the produce of the country. Mr. B. continued in business until his death of a prevailing epidemic, May 10, 1813.
