Notes for ANDREW MESSENGER II:
Nettie Post Wright and Nettie Wright Adams, The Messenger Family in the Colony of Connecticut, (West Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut: T.B. Simonds, Inc., 1963), pg. 1
"Andrew Messenger (2) was one of the founders and first settlers of Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1640. He sold land there in 1648 to Robert Husted. In 1661 he was one of ten to agree to inform the Governor and Council against Quakers. Much censure has been passed upon the New England colonies for their severe laws against those calling themselves Quakers; One principal thing which tends to mislead the judgment of many, in this present age, is the supposition that those who suffered the punishment of the law were essentially of the same spirit and practice of the respectable and worthy society of Friends or Quakers of the present day."

Notes for EDWARD MESSENGER:
[Anne Farrell (Higgins) Wood, Messengers of Connecticut (?), Vol I, 2nd Ed, (1964), pg. 5:]
"Edward Messenger was one of the first
settlers of the Colony of Connecticut. He located at Windsor where a fort was
soon after built, and a fur trade with the Indians sprang up. In 1621 and for
many years after, all the settlers for New England landed in the Colony of New
Plymouth or Massachusetts and emigrated from thence to Connecticut. For several
years after 1635 there were no settlements by the English in Connecticut except
in the towns of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield and a few in Saybrook.
Edward Messenger had land in 1650 at Greenfield (nw Bloomfield), Connecticut He
gave to his daughter Doreas , who married Peter Mills the Dutchman, 20 acres of
his Greenfield land (1660) to build upon. In the list of those having a family
and a horse at Windsor in 1669, the name of Edward Messenger appears and he was
a Grantee at New London in 1651.
"11. - Doreas Messenger, b. Sept. 23, 1650; mar. PETER Mills. She died May
18, 1688
"12. + Nathaniel (or Nathan) Messenger, b. June 18, 1653/4
"13. x Deliverance Messenger (son), b. Apr. 7, 1655; d. 1676. Another source
says Deliverance died in 1718.
"The Memorial History of Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut states that
'There was probably a period of fifty or sixty years during which Windsor,
Hartford County, Connecticut was the political, religious and social center of
the little colony, in the southwest part of Windsor known by the name of
"Messenger Farms". However, it was a long way to go to church and very difficult
in winter, with snow three feet deep, or more, from November to March. They even
had to go to Windsor to "get fire" when they were so unfortunate as to be out of
it in those days before friction matches. So these zealous people, in May 1734,
petitioned for "winter privileges" and were granted liberty to conduct a
separate worship from November to March. Two years later they were made
independent of the Windsor church.'"

[Jerilyn Jacklin Reniger, The Messenger Family in Portage and Geauga Counties, Ohio, (Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan 1966).]
"4. x Henry Messinger (sic) was b. in England in 1618 and d. in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts in 1681. He mar. SARAH ____, who d. June 6, 1697. They were the parents of twelve children. Henry and Sarah were residents of Boston prior to 1640. His residence adjoined King's Chapel burying ground and he was the first known proprietor as appears by the Book of Possessions of the land on which now stands the 'Record of Deeds' building and a part of that formerly covered by the Boston Museum on Tremont St. This is a position of the land or square bounded by School an Queen (now Court) Streets. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, a Freeman in 1665, and by trade a joiner. On Jan. 27, 1640, Henry Messinger (sic) had lot of land allowed him at Mudy River, by town grant for two heads. (See Drake's History of Boston). His will was dated March 15, 1672, and his signature, written in the old style, is quite distinct. He probably died in 1681, as his property was appraised at 496 pounds, 9 shillings and 6 pence, April 30 of that year. He left his estate to his wife, with power to divide it as she might choose among her children, with the exception of his oldest son, John, to whom he bequeathed 'Five Shillings and no more, for reasons best known to myself.' His wife Sarah lived to an advanced age; her will was dated 1694 and proved June 24, 1697. She left the household estate to be divided equally between her sons Simeon and Thomas, Simeon to have the left hand side of the line to be drawn from the highway on the Westerly end to Savate's fence on the Easterly end, being the side next Bumstead's with the Common (Boston Common or part) also the 'Messinger Coat of Arms'. To Thomas she left the right hand side, next the burying plot. The livestock also to be divided between her sons. Her household goods she wished divided among he daughters, and Anna Messinger, daughter of her son John, and she appointed her friend Simeon Stone of Watertown, and Abraham Williams of Marlboro to see that the property was properly divided."
