THE PALMER LINE
of
JOSEPH BREED and his wife PRISCILLA AVERY BREED,
From a biographical sketch in "The First
Congregational Church of Stonington, Conn." by Richard A. Wheeler:
"Walter Palmer came to Stonington, Conn., in 1653, and located on lands that he
had purchased of Governor Haynes. He subsequently received other grants of land
from the town of Pequot, adjoining his first purchase. He erected his dwelling
house on the east side of Wequetoquoc Cove, near the present residence of Thomas
J. Wheeler, Esq., on the site of the Old Slack House.
His lands were bounded on the west by Wequetoquoc Cove, south by the Bay,
easterly by Thomas Stanton's grants, and north by the Chesebrough land, and
lands given to Thomas Minor.
Walter Palmer came to this country from England, and reached Charlestown, Mass.,
in 1629. He brought with him his dau., Grace, whose mother died in England. He
was sworn Freeman, May 18, 1631. Sometime before 1633, he m. Rebecca Short, and
with his new wife and dau., Grace, joined the church in Charlestown, Mass., June
1, 1633, where he continued to reside until 1642, when they removed to Rehoboth,
Plymouth Colony. Here, he purchased and re¬ceived large tracts of land, and was
elected Deputy to the General Court of Plymouth in 1643 and 1647.
During his residence in Rehoboth, he held various offices, and enjoyed largely
the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens. Mr. Palmer died twelve years
before the First Congregational Church of Stonington, Conn., was formed, but
having been one of the early settlers, and prominent in laying the foundation of
the town and church, he has been given this brief tribute of respect. Mr.
Pal¬mer died in 1662, leaving a will which was probated in Boston, Mass."

After the death of his first wife, John Breed moved from Lynn, Mass., to
Stonington, Conn., where he purchased land from Gershom Palmer (1644-1719),
father of his second wife. He built his home, and a bark mill where he carried
on his business as a tanner and currier. More than 200 years later, a lineal
descendant, living on the original farm, was using John Breed's ancient nether
millstone as a stepping stone at the house entrance. John Breed was the founder
of the Stonington branch of the Breed family. He and his second wife, Mercy,
were buried in the old Wequetequoc burial place with the Palmer family. The blue
slate tombstone, erected in 1772 by six of their children then living, reads:
"In memory of a Pious Pair this carved stone is erected here, viz: of Mr. John
Breed and his wife Mercy, who lived together in ye marriage state in a most
