Other spellings of the Graves name- De Grevis,Greve, Grave, Greaves, Greeves. The family is one of the most ancient in England. Those of that name went in with the Norman army. The name is in the Dornesday Book. The English family was represented by many men of honor and distinction. Thomas Graves was born before 1585 in England. and came to America with his wife Sarah and 5 children, all of mature age. The youngest was about 16 years old. They settled at Hartford, Connecticut Thomas was exempt from training in the militia because of being over 60. They moved to Hatfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts in 1661. Isaac and John - sons of Thomas were killed at the same time by a surprise Indian attack while they were building a house.
