Settled in Norwichtown, occupying house on Sentry Hill Rd. In 1749 bought land and in 1754 brought 2 young elm trees from woods to shade his shop, now called the "Coit Elms." A leading patriot. On committee to report on "Boston Circular" 1767 (as was Gershom Breed.) Contractor and dispenser of public stores. 1776 authorized by Gen. Court to purchase ammunition of states man-of-war, "Oliver Cromwell" on which, in 1778, he was appt Capt's clerk. 1777 directed by Gov. to distribute 300 baskets of salt to inhabitants of Connecticut. 1782 Member of Assoc. after illicit trade. Was Gov. Trumbell's right-hand man throughout War and a mamb. of the Perpetual Council of Safety.
Buried Cliff St. Burying Ground, Chelsea, Norwich. INSCRIPTION:
"Capt. Jabez Perkins
20 Feb. 1795
died in the 67th year
of his age."
