"...he was ordained pastor of the church at Northampton to succeed Rev. Eleazar Mather, whose widow he married. He filled the pulpit continuously fifty-six years, during the last two years of which he had his grandson, Jonathan Edwards associated with him. Mr. Stoddard was a man of exceptional intellectual powers and great industry. His most memorable work 'Doctrine of Instituted Churches' (1700) was an answer to Increase Mather's 'Order of the Gospel.' This book was a powerful apology for the 'Half-way covenant,' and started a theological controversy which raged more than half a century. 'His unremitting industry is no better shown than in the fact that he left many sermons in manuscript which he had never preached.'"
