Came to America in the "Griffen" 1633 with Cotton to Boston. Was freman 1 May 1634. Rep. 1635. Selectman 1634-7. Went to Rhode Island and in 1635 was Ass't to Gov. Coddington. 1641 was Dep. Gov. of Rhode Island In Boston 1650-58 and was selectman every year between 1652-57. Gov. of Rhode Island 1666, '67 and '68. Lived in Taunton 1670-72. A tract of 10,000 acres of land on the Merrimac River was granted to him in 1658 known as Brenton's Farm. 28 Feb. 1639 as an "Elder" and was one of the 9 incorporators of Newport. Prob. made survey of Newport Harbor for the pupose of selecting best spot for a ford. Brenton's land was the neck that still bears his name. He erected "the 4-chimney house" of brick with a walk on the roof and his great-grandson, Jahleel, was a rear-admiral in the British navy and his son in 1770 was a British Baronet.
