His patron was Ranulph de Meschines, Earl of Chester and Lincoln, for whom he acted as sheriff and from whom he obtained significant land grants. He bought large estates from Eleanor Malbank in 1214; in 1227, he acquired the manors of Edgmund and Newport, and in 1230 manors of Ford, all in Salop. Early in the reign of Henry II, he was appointed Governor of the castles of Carmarthen and Cardigan and made Sheriff of the counties of Salop and Stafford. He served as Constable of Ulster for Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster, and was given land there, too. He built the castle of Heleigh in County Stafford and the Red Castle in Salop. He founded Hulton Abbey. He later added other castle governorships and became more powerful.
