Following several years of poor health including a brain tumor, Bruce was not able to function as he had previously. He walked with a crutch or cane and sometimes had difficulty making decisions. On a trip to Montana to visit his children, he stopped for lunch in a small town but got confused in trying to get back to the highway. He ended up stuck in the snow some distance from help - tried to walk for help and froze to death.
