{ From old clippings and memories of tradition furnished by Victoria Buchmann-Abbott, the youngest daughter of the family }
John Buchman was born in Dottingen, Switzerland September 29, 1827 and was nine years of age when he came to America with the Steigmeyer party. Little did he realize that he would become the son-in-law of Frederick and Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer by marrying their yet unborn daughter in later years. His family settled on a farm near Republic Ohio where he worked until he became of age. He now left home to go to the Republic Academy for a period of two years. To pay expenses he worked in a doctor's office and clerked in a grocery. In 1850 at the age of 23 he formed a partnership with a Mr MacConnegy. They bought wagons, horses, seed, stock, and farming implements. They organized a party of 25 men and set out for California in search for gold. In this party was David H Meyer, the son of Jacob Meyer whose bank barn was built by Frederick Steigmeyer whose daughter, Elizabeth, married John after he returned from California. It was David's sister, Louisa who married the youngest brother of Frederick's wife, Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer, Sebastian Senn. The journey across the plains and through the mountain passes was typical of the day. They were accosted by Indians and lost some of their stock, and suffered numerous privations. The journey took 3 months and they were the last party to get through the illfated Donner Pass before it was snowed in for the winter. They took up government land in the Sacramento Valley near Sacramento and established a combined farm, dairy, and trading post. They operated a pack train to furnish miners with food and necessities and took their surplus to market. Flour sold for $100.00 a barrel and shipping costs amounted to $2.00 a pound. Late in 1856 he returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama and boat to New York and Philadelphia where he had his gold bullion coined. He returned to Tiffin where he bought a 160 acre farm west of the city which he owned the rest of his life. On April 12, 1858 he married Elizabeth Steigmeyer, the second child of Frederick and Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer. The bride was not yet 16 years of age, while her husband was thirty. they lived on the 160 acres for 30 years. John had intended to return to California after his family had well started so he would have help of his own, but when Leander and Zeno, his promising sons, passed away he gave up the long cherished hope and bought another farm south of Tiffin. In 1887 they moved to this farm where a large house and other buildings were built. Here he passed away October 8, 1897 due to heart failure. John never retired and was always active. He was a good provider and a devout member of his church.
