Francis and Magdalene went to Indiana with the remainder of the Senn family when they took over the land they had earlier purchased from government land sales. They were located in White County Indiana. They had no children. They operated considerably over a hundred acres and had some Swiss folks living with them or in a tenant house. (according to census statements). As the years went by they decided to give their property to the church at their death. A deed was made out making the transfer but some sort of "rift" came up and the following year the property was transferred back. At the death of Francis the estate was administered by his brother John. At this point we lose contact with the wife but later county records show her to moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio to live with a sister or relatives. Here she died but the burning of Hamilton County Court House Destroyed all records and her record is gone.

Michael Senn died at the age of 18. He was apparently at home at the time of his death which took place at Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio. the family was apparently living here at the time and his oldest brother, John Baptist Senn had married the year before and maintained the home for all of them
for he did not go to Indiana to live until 1848
according to the History of Pulaski County Indiana. The family prayer book had
written on its fly leaves two statements. These were, "John Senn died at 10:00
pm January 24, 1840 and is buried at Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio." and "Michael
died at 6:00 am at Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio on September 15, 1842 and is
buried at Tiffin."
In six more years, the youngest son, Sebastian Senn, was twenty years of
age and had taken employment with a railroad that originated in Sandusky, Ohio.
John Baptist Senn and his wife and two children decided to go to Indiana to take
up their holdings and of course the mother Nothburga Schifferle Senn went with
them. She died in Indiana and lies at rest by the side of her son Francis
Xavier who was buried in the parish cemetery in Pulaski.

Frederick Steigmeyer was born in Oberendingen
Seitzerland November 12, 1808. He came to America in August of 1831. His first
American home was in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Here he and his parents worked at
the carpenter trade. He returned to Switzerland where he courted and won the
heart of Elizabeth Senn and they were married early in the Spring of 1837. He
and his brother John Steigmeyer had already established land claims at Attica in
Seneca County, Ohio, so he and his wife came at once by sailing vessel and canal
boat to Sandusky City, Ohio. Because they had little in the way of worldly
goods to carry they walked the twenty nine miles from Sandusky to Attica.
Frederick's eighty acre farm was covered with timber and it needed a house and
other buildings. Federick started housekeeping with another Swiss emigrant who
had been in America for some years. This man (Jack Meyer) furnished his
quarters and from here he worked as a carpenter building barns and houses for
the early settlers. In those days the timbers were felled and squared by hand
tools, mortised and fitted together so that on a "grand raising day" neighbors
came from far and wide and helped put these timbers together and raise them into
a framework for the new house or barn. Frederick could "lay this work out" and
was considered a master workman. He taught his wife's brother Johannes Baptist
Senn the trade when he arrived at Attica in 1838.
In erecting these farm buildings he earned enough money to build his own
log cabin on the eighty acres he had purchased from the government the year
before. His farming was profitable and in 1841 he purchased the Metcalf (now
Heabler - 1960) mill site. It had just been destroyed by fire. the water power
was small and he could only operate the saw mill on a limited basis. He
conceived the idea of installing a burr to grind grain. There was not enough
power for both so he arranged "to saw all day and grind flour and feed all
night." In 1847 he sold out and with the profit and the money he had saved he
bought the large farm east of Attica known as the John and May Steigmeyer farm.
In 1864 he purchased the farm adjacent to this and added it to his holdings.
Frederick and Elizabeth lived to celebrate their "golden wedding." In the
midst of great festivity each became the recipients of a pair of gold rimmed
spectacles. The news story said, "They found them under their plates." It is
an old Swiss custom to cross the knife and fork and then turn the plate over
them. After the grace each person then "turned his plate over" and placed his
knife and fork beside it. They were indeed surprised to find the spectacles
there with their knife and fork. The news clipping said that everyone well
remembers Frederick's farm as "a model of neatness and exactness." It said
further, "He was always interested in and always endeavoring to learn. From
every standpoint he was always a good citizen, and this is the very highest
compliment American neighbors can pay their dead."
Victoria Buchman-Abbott, his granddaughter, says of him, "He was a devout
member of his church and together with others formed the Attica Catholic Society
and it was he who erected the church building doing the work with his hands and
charging nothing for it." That building still stands as a part of the present
structure. Victoria also said, "Well do I remember little Grandmother Elizabeth
Senn-Steigmeyer with her soft spoken manner. One was scarcely in her home
before she came with a plate of her homecade cookies or cakes and a glass of
something to drink.
To Victoria goes credit for having saved the news clippings of the time and
it is through these that we have been able to measure the "heresay traditions."

Maria and Maurice left Attica, Seneca County, Ohio and settled in Indiana about the same time Maria's brothers settled there. Two of the daughters married Michael Ruff and remained in the "home" area and so we have no trouble getting their record.

Sebastian Senn was the youngest member of the
Johannes Michael Senn family. He was a lad of just ten summers when he arrived
in America. The family remained quite close-knit for they were strangers in a
strange land. They lived at first on the farm owned by Sebastian's
brother-in-law Frederick Steigmeyer. Here Sebastian learned about livestock and
about carpenter work for Frederick Steigmeyer was a master carpenter.
Sebastian's brother John Baptist Senn worked with Frederick as an apprentice.
Sebastian liked the study of livestock and pursued this subject to the very
farthest so that gradually he became filled in the knowledge of the veterinarian
of that day. In later life he was respected for this and farmers brought their
animals from great distances to have Sebastian attend them and he was called all
over the country side to attend sick and ailing livestock. In the study of
carpentry he advanced as far as it was possible to do and became a millwright.
He had lost his father just two years after arriving in this country. His
oldest brother, John Baptist, stood back of the family and helped keep it
together until Sebastian was able to do a man's work...He was able to get
employment with a new railroad that ran from Sandusky City to Republic and then
to Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio. Here he fired the engine with cord wood for
some time. The family now lived in the Tiffin area and attended church there,
for the father had been laid to rest in the cemetery of old St Mary as was his
brother in just two years after his father died.
His older brother, John Baptist Senn, had gone to Indiana and had taken
claim to farm land there in 1838 at the request of the father for he had come to
America to establish his family as farmers. This Indiana land, "wild" and
forested, needed development. He did not go to Indiana to live until ten years
after the purchase of the land. Sebastian was a man of twenty by this time.
Implying the carpenter trade, John Baptist and Frederick Steigmeyer had worked
all over the area but since so may of the farmers around Attica and Republic
were named MEYER and were likewise from Switzerland, Sebastian learned to know
some of the MEYER girls quite well. The Meyer folk had come to the Attica,
Republic, and Tiffin area about ten years before the Senn family arrived and all
were well established. Possibly the wealthiest of all of these was Jacob Meyer
who had built himself the very largest home in the entire county. It was dubbed
the "Mansion Home" by one of his grandsons. Frederick Steigmeyer had built the
large bank barn here and no doubt Sebastian had carried water and helped on this
barn. In any event he met the Meyer daughter, Louisa Jane. In later years
Jacob Meyer and his good wife established bob-sledding parties to their home in
the winter time. Sebastian had developed into one of the very best dance
fiddlers in the entire county. (1960-Ray Senn has that violin today) He could
call the most intricate of square dances and was sought after on account of
this. No doubt he was aften at the Meyer home to give his services. Louisa Jane
Meyer and the reputation of being one of the most fleet-footed girls on the
dance floor and could do the most intricate of all the dances. This attracted
Sebastian's attention and together with the fact that she was the daughter of
one of the most wealthy farmers of the county, Sebastian no doubt began to dream
of becoming a son-in-law of this family. He courted Louisa and won her her and
they were married in 1852 and went to Indiana to take title to his part of the
land purchases his brother John had made fourteen years before.
The Meyer families in and around Attica were all descendents of the ardent
Swiss reform movement and were very strongly Protestant. Sebastian was a Roman
Catholic. Louisa, a Protestant, consented to this marriage on one condition
only and that was that any children were to be left to decide what church they
wanted to join. The children were all born in Indiana. Louisa was not happy
with the persistent urging of the priest for her to become a Roman Catholic.
Her family in Ohio did not like this either and they urged the family to return
to Ohio. Letters have been found that were written by Sebastian's sister,
Elizabeth Senn-Steigmeyer, urging them to leave Indiana because she felt that
Ohio land was better than that of Indiana. In any event, Sebastian was soon
looking over various Venice Twp Ohio farms with a view towards purchase. About
this time Louisa's mother passed away (her father had died seven years before)
and the estate had to be settled to satisfy inheritance claims of the nine Meyer
children. Louisa inherited a nice little fortune for that day. This together
with what money they brought from Indiana was sufficient to purchase a very well
developed farm right in the very midst of the Meyer clan, and right on the Meyer
road.
After a few years, John and Federick Steigmeyer and their wives Elizabeth
and Catherine Senn-Steigmeyer together with Sebastian Senn were early members of
a committee to organize a Roman Catholic parish at Attica Ohio. Sebastian and
Frederick were on the building committee. Money was raised and Frederick was the
contractor who erected the building. He charged nothing for his labor. With
this activity another persistent drive set in to cause Louisa to join the church
and have her children confirmed. The Meyer families became indignant for had
they not been through it all in Switzerland? Louisa explained all this to the
new priest and told him that he was very welcome to come to their home at all
times but that the children were to decide for themselves what church they
wanted to join. When he persisted, she took her children to the home of her
sister Anna who was the wife of the village physician, Dr James C Myers (no
relation except by marriage to Meyers). Her brothers and sisters and the good
doctor then went to the priest and urged him to desist from his method. He was
told that if he would leave this family alone other than to visit in the home,
all would be well. Even Sebastian's sister Elizabeth urged the priest to
cooperate. The agreement was made and Louisa returned to the fireside of
Sebastian. All went well after that. Some may think that Louisa should have
given in but her marriage had been made under the agreement as set forth above
and Louisa stood her ground. She had the reputation of being one of the most
diplomatic of women and everyone said she was the softest spoken and most even-dispositioned
woman they ever knew. All the brothers and sisters of her family rose to become
people of affairs in the community and many of the next generation became
outstanding profession and business leaders. Louisa never lived to rock a single
grandchild, but Sebastian lived to see 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. However,
the little girl died in infancy.
This unit of the Senn family is the only one in which a situation arose
concerning religious differences. As the result of this problem coupled with
the refusal by the priest to permit the sons of Elizabeth to join the Patrons of
Husbandry (Grange) and remain in the church they renounced their faith and
joined that of Louisa and became staunch supporters of it and were heavy
contributors to the establishment of its college (Buchtel, now the Univ. of
Akron). This should answer any questions about mixed faith that might arise.

Maria was a kind and most considerate person. She
married into one of the best families in her home community, but her husband
failed to earn a living even though a brother of his who had risen to fame as an
executive of a National Farm Magazine had gotten him established on several
remunerative positions. Maria then bought a small business thinking that he
might help her with it. This proved futile and Charles went west where in
Pitkin County, Colorado, he obtained a divorce on October 5 1900. He later
returned and asked forgiveness for his errors but Maria refused to reconsider
the matter. Maria was a very keen business woman and accumulated a sizeable
fortune which she kept in savings accounts in various Cleveland banks. She
traveled extensively all over the US. In later years she met and married
another man but she soon learned that his interest lay in her bank account.
When she informed him that she was capable of managing her own affairs he soon
left for El Paso County Colorado where he obtained a divorce on August 2, 1916.
He died there in 1931.
Maria always lived for her family (brothers, sister, nieces and nephews)
and enjoyed being host to them when ever they visited her in Cleveland. She
gave each niece and nephew a handsome gold watch and birthstone fob at time of
HS graduation. She always came home at Christmas time with bounteous gifts for
everyone and with great baskets of fruits and candles. Aunt "Ria" and Santa
Claus were synonymous to all of us. She dropped dead in the Cleveland Post
Office as she turned from the window where she had just mailed parcels to her
relatives at Attica, Ohio.

Frank completed the elementary school program and attended Republic Academy for several terms. He then embarked in sales work with several Tiffin Mercantile houses for a period of time. After his marriage he returned to the home farm and entered partnership with his brother John in its operation. The farm was later divided and Frank took over the part on which the "Old Home" was located, while John took another part and erected new buildings. In later years Frank sold the farm and moved to Attica where he purchased a clothing and gents furnishing store. He and his son Ray, carried this on as a partnership until Frank's death. Ray then carried this business on until he was elected Post Master for the village. Frank was an ardent Mason and was always in regular attendance until the time when his son was elected Master. Directly after Ray was installed, Frank was taken ill and was never able to return. He and Hannah were very active in the Attica Universalist church all their lives. Frank had a rare sense of humor and was always considered a welcome guest.

Elizabeth was always very popular among the younger set around Attica, Seneca County, Ohio. Early in her life she became attached to a group of your women who were active in the Attica Universalist church. She was usually on the receiving end of many practical jokes perpetrated by her brothers and sister. One time a neighbor lad wrote her a letter asking her for the privilege of coming the next Sunday evening to "sit up with her." She did not care for his company for she was otherwise engaged but she did not want to offend him or his family and was very much in a quandary as to how to avoid giving him a "date" and not offend the family. Her brother Frank told here that that was easy to handle and suggested that she answer the note at once by saying. "You must be mistaken or misinformed because I am not ill and will not need anyone to sit up with me." It worked.

Fremont early learned the slater's trade and became an expert at finishing church steeples. This earned him the top money. He plied his trade in Cleveland for a number of years. He then returned to his home community at Bloomville and farmed for a time. He later moved to the village of Bloomville and opened a hardware and roofing business. He was very successful. His son Fred was a partner with him in later years. Both "Free" and "Lissie" were very active in church and Masonic affairs. Free was a member of aal the York Rite bodies while Lissie was interested in the Eastern Stars.

John spent his entire active life as a farmer and for many years he made a sideline out of custom hatching of chickens which he expanded extensively upon his retirement to the village of Attica, Seneca County, Ohio. He and his brother Frank operated the home farm together as a unit for several years, dividing the residence into two homes. In 1896 the farm was physically divided and John built a new set of buildings on his part. Frank kept the "homestead" part of the farm. John was elected to various township offices including membership on the school board. He and his sons were active in the Masonic Lodge of the village of Attica, and the entire family was active in the Universalist church which was the church of his mother's family, for they were ardent Swiss Protestants.

Amelia was active in church work all her life serving as a Sunday School teacher and as President of her ladies Aid Society until within a few months of her death. Both she and John took keen interest in their grandchildren and the annual Christmas Tree party and family get-together it occasioned, it was a joyous affair for young and old alike. Amelia kept this active after John's passing and at her death we found a letter in effects in which she urged that these family gatherings be continued. This has been done with an almost 100% participation. (1960) Today the family has grown so that a public hall or party house is hired to take care to the group.

Under the name of F Senn and Son, Ray and his father organized a clothing and shoe business in February 1912 which continued until his father's death when Ray took it over under his own name until March 1936. Ray was appointed Postmaster of the village of Attica, Seneca County, Ohio in May 1935 and found that business and public service were too time consuming and strenuous so he sold the store. On July 2 1945 he resigned the Postmastership. Service during the trying times of WWII coupled with the loss of his son in the service took its toll and Ray took a year to relax. He then associated himself with the JC Penney Company at Marion for a period. On leaving this he started work with the Republic Company in Republic, Ohio. This was such closer to his home in Attica. In a few years he returned to the JC Penney Company at Bellevue, Ohio where he remained until his retirement. Ray is a Past Master of Attica Masonic Lodge. She served as teacher and Sunday School Superintendent and in practically all the church organizations she served as president. She also served in the State Organization of her church. She was active in the various organizations of her community and particularly in that of the Agricultural Extension Service. Her thoughts were constantly of others. All during her long illness caused by Malignancy, she constantly made and did for others who were less fortunate--so she said. She kept up her sewing, knitting, and tatting--always for others--until the very end when she was taken to the hospital for the very last time. Each of her nephews and nieces received as a wedding gift, a large beautifully patterned crocheted table cloth made by her hand. One of the finest compliments paid her was by Mildred, her brother Harold's wife, who said, "I never knew the real Helen until I became associated with her in the last days and learned how really unselfish she was." Her husband was a fine complement to her and always did all he could to see that her life could come to its fullest expression. They farmed all their life.
