Demeter

Personality:
A crash sounds. "Macavity!" yells this young queen. Demeter’s obviously got a psychic touch somewhere, however faint. She has the innate ability to sense whenever Macavity is near, and does her part in warning the Jellicles. This cat hardly ever smiles, and it seems as if, unlike her sister, Bombalurina, her serious side overpowers her sense of fun. She hasn’t completely lost it yet, though. She teams up with Jellylorum and Bombalurina to sing ‘The Old Gumbie Cat.’ She seems to enjoy singing some silly stuff sometimes, though she also has many serious songs to sing. She sings about Macavity and Grizabella, both times teaming up with Bombalurina, and has a line in ‘The Jellicle Ball’ about the moon. Demeter also seems to have an affection for Munkustrap, for she is constantly singing in various songs with him, and when he gets beat up by Macavity, she’s there to lick his wounds.
CATS Spotter’s Guide Entry:
Demeter’s got an odd coat pattern. Most of it is a brownish-blackish color, which fades into a yellowish color on her legs and arms. On her legs, this yellow fades into the white, which continues for the rest of the leg, but on her arm, after the yellow, comes a reddish-colored silk glove, which ends at the end of the glove (where else?). She’s got the standard white face, but her headpiece is relatively normal…brownish color with bits of white and black. There’s one thing about her headpiece, though, and that’s that it has a sort of feral look about it. I’m probably just seeing things, but I think so. Her collar has spikes, like Bombalurina’s.
Name Origin:
Demeter is the Greek goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. One book of Greek mythology says that Demeter was ‘beneficent but moody,’ and that seems to apply to this cat. She’s quite well-liked by the other Jellicles and her sister Bombalurina, who always has the need to place an arm around Demeter’s shoulder, but she seems to have her unfocused moments, in which she appears to be thinking about Macavity and other cats.
Other Comments:
There’s quite a few people who would tell you that Demeter was kidnapped by Macavity as a kitten. I for one do not know how to explain Bombalurina having some connection with Macavity (maybe they were mates), but that would explain Demeter knowing about the Mystery Cat. The thing with Macavity + Bombalurina doesn’t work with this other theory, which says that Macavity kidnaps Demeter because he wants her to fall in love with him. He could have had Bombalurina as a mate first, and now wants Demeter, (hey, he’s a cat, what do you expect?) but I’m just going to leave well enough alone and not contemplate philosophical truths right now.
