In the above township, the question of high interest and depressed values, private credit, contraction and resumption of specie, has been brought to the attention of the people. The democrats called no caucus. The republicans called a caucus, nominated 8 democrats, 3 republicans and 1 liberal, and entitled it a "People's" ticket. Both tickets were composed of the very best of men, and the issue was a square trial between Government credit and personal credit, the Greenback ticket representing the Government credit with the above result. The last year's Supervisor was returned.
FABIUS
Whole number of votes cast 202. Henry Stotz, the last year's Supervisor (Greenback),
was returned, by a majority of 27. Town Treasurer, Clark Rice, 26; Town Clerk, J.P.
Brody, 30; Jus. Peace, T. Wyman full term, W.P. Morrison vacancy, 25; H.W. Com. Geo. Reed, 11;
The rest of the democratic ticket was elected with similar majorities.
FLOWERFIELD
The Republicans held a caucus and put several democrats on their ticket, and titled it
a "Union" ticket. Ira Starkweather, a greenback republican (not an independent greenback
man), and a member of last year's Board of Supervisors, was returned by a majority of 39.
Starkweather (union), had 125 votes. J.H. Heck, independent G.B. has 86. The Union Ticket
was elected throughout. Town Clerk, Hiram Weinberg major. 55; Treas., John Freeman, major. 20;
Jus. P., T.J. Edwards, 32.
In this township the people's attention has been called to the finance question much later
than in Lockport, and it seems that by the vote that 17 out of 24 are greenback men. What
will it be by fall, when all have had a chance to hear.
BURR OAK
Elected a greenback ticket throughout, the Supervisor returned by a
majority of 208, the balance of the ticket not quite so large a majority.
SHERMAN
Still another of Hull's "grabbers" returned from Sherman. Henry C. Hopkins hops back on
the Board by a majority of 41 votes. What will become of the treasury next year? Clerk, J.A.P.
Mason; Treasurer, C. Zelt, Jr.; Supt., D.L. Arney; Inspector, H.C. Hopkins again; Highway Commissioner,
Beers Wilson; Justice of the Peace, John Kasdorf; Drain Commissioner, Nicholas Wenzel.
FAWN RIVER
Sends up the old veteran, Isaac C. Toll, by a democratic majority of 23. The names of the other officers
not reported.
WHITE PIGEON
Giles B. Markham, another "grabber", RETURNED for Supervisor! He lives under the shadow of the
grabber king, on the next farm South! Clerk, David C. Page; Treas., J.K. Bottorf; Justice Peace, John W. Saunders;
Supt., E. R. Williard; Inspector, W.N. Elliot; Highway Com., Casper Y. Runyan.
MOTTVILLE
The democratic ticket was elected in Mottville. S.M. Nash for Supervisor ran against J.A. Hartzler and had a tie.
Mr. Nash was a member of last year's Board. By the drawing, Hartzler was elected. Clerk, Dewit C. Fuller; Treas.,
Thomas H.B. Ferguson; Justice of the Peace, Jacob L. Rathbon; Supt., Sylvester Heimback; Inspector, Amos Clark;
Highway Commissioner, Joseph Knoer; all democratic except Hartzler.
CONSTANTINE
One correspondent says - "We had a few shots fired from the old cast iron
cannon, and a bonfire after the votes were counted, and the majority for Aaron Howard found to be really 70,
as there were 4 votes for A. Howard and Aron Howard, it counts in the returns official as 66. HOWARD, OLD
SUPERVISOR, MAJORITY 70."
Another reporter says - "A hotter contested election was never seen. The followers
of the King who has been libeling the Board of Supervisors offered to bet two to one against the
old member all day. They carried men down and up stairs, who were unable to walk, to get them to the polls
to vote against Howard. You ought to see the king's and squealeys' chops fall, when it was found that
Howard was only 17 behind the king's candidate on the straight vote; and when the count showed Howard ahead,
the chasm of blank despair never yawned more fearfully than it did in the enraged countenance of the 'boss grabber',
who hunted his hole and sneaked away like a hound pup in a thunder storm. This is the largest majority given to
any Supervisor in Constantine for 25 years; the vote being 552."
Town Clerk, D.E. Wilson, Rep.; Jus. Peace, S.R. Rockwell, Dem.; Supt., J.W. Beardslee, Rep.; Inspector, H.H. Harwood,
Rep.; Highway Com., John Hamilton, Dem.; Drain Com., Chas. Schall, Dem.; Constables, Morgan Barry, Dem. 282; Cyrus
Field, Rep., 330; H. Hutchins, Rep., 286; L. Bennett, Rep., 281.
