Munkustrap sighed. He wasn’t normally like this, nervous and such, but this was the day, he told himself. This was the day he’d finally do it. The day he’d ask Demeter to be his mate.
The two had been friends since kittenhood, Munkustrap was a day or two older. He had been there when she danced her first dance in the Jellicle ball. He was the most worried when she disappeared. He’d been the first into battle, dispite his age, to rescue her from Macavity, and his had been the warmest ‘welcome home.’
He sat down on the tire, and scanned the junkyard. It seemed that everyone was here.
Everyone, except Demeter.
Mistoffelees and Victoria were sitting by the bumper on the old ford.
Electra and the other younger kittens were playing with something in the Junkyard’s center.
Bombalurina was flirting with Tugger.
Alonzo was trying to impress the other queens.
Jellylorum and Jennyanydots were sewing, and talking to Skimbleshanks at the same time.
Munkustrap sat up, there she was. Demeter entered the junkyard, she looked around, almost bewildered, as if looking for someone.
Please let her be looking for me! Munkustrap begged silently, he turned his head, pretending not to see her as she rushed over.
"Munkustrap! I have news about Macavity!" She said, almost whispering, crawling up beside him. Munkustrap sighed, he wanted Demeter to be looking for him, but not just to give him bad news.
"What?" He asked.
"A friend of mine, an alley cat, lives down by Macavity, and she found out he’d been planning an attack."
"Attack on us?"
Demeter nodded, looking around nervously. Munkustrap moved towards her.
"Don’t worry Dem, even if Macavity did attack us, I wouldn’t let him hurt anyone. Especially you."
Demeter turned to look at Munkustrap, a bit embarrassed. Munkustrap flashed a dashing smile, but it faded as many of the Jellicles gasped, and ran towards the tire.
It was Macavity, he walked into the Junkyard, Munkustrap pinned his ears.
"Munkustrap!" Macavity said, sounding sincere, he continued. "Please, don’t send me away just yet! I, I’ve come to beg forgiveness, in hopes of joining the tribe." The Jellicles gasped, many of them shook their heads.
Munkustrap was stricken, was it too easy? Too much of a coincidence?
"I.. I guess not…" Macavity turned to leave.
"Wait, just, just give me a minute Mac." Munkustrap turned to look at Demeter. She was the one he truly cared about, what did she think?
Before Demeter could answer his silent question, Bombalurina stood up.
"We should at least give him a chance. Everyone deserves a chance. A test or something!"
"Well, that sounds fair….. I… You’ve got a day Macavity."
