Really Rosie Page

Last winter, I produced, music directed, and costumed designed a student production of the children's musical "Really Rosie". I also played the part of Rosie. It was a fabulous project, and I really enjoyed putting it together. Here are some photos from our production.

This is me as Rosie. Rosie is a ten year old Diva who considers herself to be the star of her block. Yes, I was twenty years old when I played the part! :)

In the show, Rosie hooks up with the other kids on her street and they decide to make a movie. Before making it, however, Rosie insists that all the kids go through a "screen test". This photo is of Johnny's screen test. His song was called "One Was Johnny". The cast members are: Erich as Lenny, Me (Rebecca) as Rosie, Sarah as Sally, Quincy as Johnny, Jeremy as Pierre, Akua as Alligator, Kathy as Kathy, and Jennie as Dolly.

At one point, it begins to rain. The kids hide in the cellar to keep dry. While they're down there, they try to scare each other. Sally, played by Sarah, sings the song "The Awful Truth" in which she claims that she was born to be Mrs. Dracula. Her back up singers are Kathy (Kathy) and Dolly (Jennie).

While in the cellar, the kids make their own "silent movie". It's set up in the Wild West. At the climax of the "movie", Rosie shoots Kathy! Here is me (Rebecca) as Rosie, Kathy as Kathy, and Erich as Lenny. Geez... This photo's HUGE! :)

After the rainstorm ends, the kids leave Rosie on her own. Determined to be dramatic, even while by herself, Rosie sings "Avenue P.", a contemplative solo about how much better her street would be if it were like the set of a movie

Chicken Soup, Rosie's little brother wanders into the scene. Since Rosie has nobody better to play with, she decides to make Chicken Soup the star of her new movie! Here's Dan as Chicken Soup, and Me (Rebecca) as Rosie.

Suddenly, the entire cast appears for the final number "Chicken Soup With Rice"! This photo features the month of February:

"In February it will be

My snow man's anniversary.

With cake for him, and soup for me!

Happy once, happy twice!

Happy Chicken Soup with Rice!"

Here's the entire cast in our final pose of "Really Rosie": Erich as Lenny, Jennie as Dolly, Quincy as Johnny, Dan as Chicken Soup, Me (Rebecca) as Rosie, Jeremy as Pierre, Kathy as Kathy, Akua as Alligator, and Sarah as Sally.

"Really Rosie" is by Maurice Sendak, with music by Carole King. It is based on Sendak's books: "The Sign on Rosie's Door", "Alligators all Around", "One Was Johnny", "Pierre", and "Chicken Soup With Rice". These books can all be found at your local bookstore or library.
