On these web pages I am including paraphrased notations of the rules as I have the time to post them. They will be a shorten version of the rule book. Always refer to the rule book for an official statement of the rules. I am listing these rules to help the spectators who do not have access to the rule books develop a better understanding of scoring and what they observe at competition. I am making notations of the page the official rules can be found.


Competition Format: (pg 6 / column 2)

The competitions consist of three rounds per team. Music and props are prohibited in all rounds of competition. Penalties are deducted from the points accumulated for the round. The teams that accumulate the most points over the three rounds will be declared the winner for that competition.

Number of Participants (page 4 column 3):

Maximum number of contestants in Round 2 is twelve (12); and there can be no more than four (4) participant differential in Round 1 and 3. The maximum number of participants for those rounds can be no more than sixteen (16.) Judges must be informed in advance of missing participates to allow an adjustment in judging. There is a 14 point penalty if “holes” are not reported. Maximum points for GENERAL IMPRESSIONS will be 8 points.



Round One:

Maximum participants: 16

Skill point values are the same as Round 2 (Pg 7)with maximum of 10 points. All participants must execute the requirement in order for the team to be awarded the points.

Choreographed routine with minumum of 2 different jumps done in UNISON.
These will be the first two jumps in the routine.

Minumum of 5 floor movements / 6 different formations, beginning formation is counted as one formation.

It is illegal to include any stunt / skill that requires SUPPORT of another person. STUNTS, MOUNTS, TUMBLING, HEEL STRECHES, SPLITS, MUSIC AND PROPS ARE PROHIBITED>

JUMPS, KICKS, LEVEL CHANGES, PEEL OFFS, AND ARM MOTIONS ARE ALLOWED.

POSSIBLE POINTS PER JUDGE for ROUND ONE:

10 points... floor mobility
10 points... vocals
20 points... jumps
10 points... team coordination
10 points... difficulty and varity
10 points... general impression


REQUIRED SKILLS FOR ROUND TWO / Compulsory:

Maximum 12 participants

Maximum Time: 1 Minute 30 sec

10 count prescision drill must be preformed at the beginning of the cheer in two staggered rounds in unison by the entire team. During 10 count the levels may be changed but formations can not be changed.

14 POINT DEDUCTION for failing to preform the 10-count precision and FIVE (5) of the possible skills during Round Two. Skills must be preformed as prescribed.

Five skills must be selected from the list of 24 skills. One skill from each category (flexiblity / jumping / tumbling.)

Limitations: No more than (3) 12 point skill levels can be selected OR two (2) from the 12 point level for maximum total of 58 points for skills. Only one of the following may be preformed: switch splits, side splits or triple splits.

Teams must submit a written discription of the cheer, it's skills and their sequence. A 14 point penalty will be assessed for skills not submitted in the order they are performed.

Teams may:

perform level changes and lunges and make formation changes.
Only the 5 skills listed in the 24 may be used. (pg 7 )

Teams may not:

perform peel-offs, additional kicks, log rolls or create varying levels.

UNIORMITY REQUIREMENTS for Round Two(pg 7 )

Skills must be performed in UNISON by the entire team. EACH PARTICIPANT, must attempt the skill or requirement, in order for credit to be awarded by the team.

Directions, arm movements, leg and body position must be the same. Vocals in Round 2 must also be in UNISON except for beginning and end.

35 point penalty is assessed if formation changes are not choreographed in unison.

Round Three:

Maximum participants: 16
Maximum time: 2- 1/2 minutes

Round 3 may contain ANY LEGAL cheer skill including: jumps, mounts, gymanastic skills.

Minimum of any 7 movements/ 8 floor formations are required.

A written description of the cheer will submitted by the cheer coach, including: gymnastic skills, tumbling, jumps and stunts. Skills must be listed in the ORDER the skill will be preformed listing difficulty and varity.

35 point penalty will be assessed when the coach fails to submit a ROUND 3 description.
A 14- point penalty will be assessed for not providing difficulty and variety points expected.

POSSIBLE POINTS PER JUDGE for ROUND THREE:

10 points... floor mobility
10 points... vocals
10 points... team coordination
5 points... general impression

Possible Skill points: any stunt options, jumps, gymanastics, stunts or tumbling movements

15 points .... tumbling, flairs, transitions, stunts and jumps
20 points .... degree of difficulty of skills
20 points .... execution of skills
10 points .... choreography
5 points .... execution bonus
5 points .... difficulty / execution factor

The team exceeds the round maximum time limit for the routine to be completed with the last cheerleader is off the mat.

10 points ….. 1 to 5 seconds over
10 points over 6 seconds
Maximum 20 points deduction for a team per round.

Incorrect use of spotting techniques:

WHY IS THIS AN ILLEGAL STUNT?

MHSAA abide by the NFHS safety / spotting techniques and requirements. In addition, you must use the Michigan’s TOUCH, WATCH, and AWAY.

For each infraction, in each round, there is a 7 point penalty.

ANSWER: THERE ARE NO SPOTTERS ON THIS STUNT.

A FALL THAT RECIEVES NO ASSISTANCE:

SPOTTERS MUST RECOGNIZE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THEIR FLYER IF THE STUNT IS FALLING APART. SPOTTERS MUST ATTEMPT TO PROTECT, CATCH, BREAK THE FALL. A 7 POINT DEDUCTION WILL OCCUR FOR EACH OCCURANCE.

The Safety Judges and the Cheer Panel WILL determine if THREE 2.0 FALLS occurred the appropriate notation will be note on the score sheet.

Illegal stunt / skill:

page 6 and 9
14 points will be deducted, for each occurrence, per round for any illegal stunts / skills AS DICTATED BY NFHS rule book.

Inappropriate, unsafe contact:

A 7 point deduction will be made by the Safety judge for each occurrence of and unsafe, inappropriate contact with another team member during the execution of a gymnastic skill, tumble or jump.

Mat Violation:

3 points will be deducted for any body part that touches the floor off the mat or for stepping off the mat during a performance. A 3 point deduction will occur for each occurrence. An additional 3 point deduction will occur for exiting the mat to the front ( by the Judges.)

Formation changes:

Round one …. 6 formation changes required

Round three …. 8 formation changes required

14 point deduction will be assessed if the minimum number of formation changes requirement have not been met.

Hair devices:

Hair devices lost during the competition becomes a safety issue. A 3 point deduction by the safety judge will occur for each occurrence.

Misc Violations:

Seven (7) points will be deducted each time one of the following occurs (most of these are SAFETY ISSUES):
chewing gum during the performance
wearing illegal hair devices or safety pins
illegal uniforms at competitions
wearing jewlery during competition
wearing badges or buttons during competition
