The People Have Spoken:
No War in Mexico
by Daniel Andrews
The people have delivered a clear message to Washington.
There have been large marches and rallies in every
major city
and in 28 state capitals. In the past week,
the working class
in the United States has risen up to contend with
the powerful
10%. Poles show that 63% of the voters do not
support military
intervention in Mexico, and the US government gets
a 79%
disapproval rating for their handling of the situation.
But forget
about the poles, for once not even Washington needs
them in
order to gage public dissatisfaction. All they
needed to do was
view the massive demonstration which took place in
Washington
this Tuesday. Or they could pick up any paper
and read about the
actions taking place all over the country.
In New York, 25,000 turned out to protest intervention
and to
vent their frustration with their own poor situation
by closing down
Wall Street for three hours. In San Francisco,
over 20,000 people
marched on the federal building. The city of
Los Angeles was
virtually closed down on Tuesday afternoon as people
of Mexican
descent left off whatever they were doing to join
in a massive rally.
Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Boston, and Philadelphia
all had
demonstrations numbering close to 20,000 participants.
Denver,
Dallas, Sacramento and too many other cities to mention
had rallies
numbering in the thousands. Even in Canada there
were large
demonstrations in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.
While the
demonstrations were largely peaceful and orderly,
there were some
violent clashes with police. The most notable
of the altercations
occurred in Washington DC itself, after a detachment
of riot police
wound up doing battle with several neighborhoods,
leading to
general rioting several blocks away while the massive
protest
marched on the White House. At one point the
president even
considered calling in troops.
As the week began, wildcat sympathy strikes were announced
all
over the country. On Wednesday the call went
out for a national
general strike. Although this strike was not
endorsed by the
AFL-CIO, the Teamsters, the UAW or any of the other
major
business unions, it has spread like wildfire throughout
the country,
the traditional business unions having lost all control
of their
workers. By the end of the week the talk of
revolution was
everywhere and workplace seizures had occurred in
Los
Angeles, Pittsburgh, Seattle and elsewhere.
Much to the dismay of Washington and the business world,
the
United States has not been plunged into chaos.
Vital services are
being maintained and people everywhere are busily
rebuilding the
communities which have disintegrated in the last fifty
years. People
are actually talking to their neighbors and working
with them for
their common good, and they are beginning to discover
a certain
quality which had been absent from their lives.
Grassroots networks
have risen up virtually overnight, coordinating their
actions
nationwide largely by way of the internet. There
is no telling where
all this will take us, providing there is no government
intervention.
Mexico’s statement has been heard, understood, and
answered.
The people have sent a clear message to Washington,
but will
Washington listen? National Guard units are
being assembled
throughout the country, nor is there a military base
that is not
preparing for action. It would be ridiculous
to think that the
government will stand back and allow the people to
truly take
control of their own lives. We must hurry to
build and consolidate
our strength before the government does react, or
it will roll right
over the top of us. Citizens, rise up to demand
your freedom and
a fair and equitable life for all!
