The assignment was to make a map of some aspect of UCI. We were allowed to make anything into a map, but the professor wanted us to have a reason behind it and not just to get to a place. So I decided to map out UCI's ethnic diversity or lack of. The original picture was on the cover of the 2001 Summer School Schedule of Classes. I decided to use that picture and my map was going to be a mosaic. There are about 20,000 students in UCI with the majority being Asians and Caucasians. Each little square represents a student. I pieced together a map of the student body because it represents that UCI isn't about nationality and races, but it is about individual students working together and making something of this University. Although, if there were no diversity then there would be no pretty picture. So this map wasn't only about how many students were Asian, Caucasian, etc., but also about the importance of diversity and individual effort to make a difference. Programs used: Adobe Illustrator |
