Tigers place Pena on 15-day DL
Morris' Contract Purchased from Triple-A

DETROIT --- The Detroit Tigers announced today they have placed first baseman Carlos Pena on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 2 with a left hamstring strain. To take Pena's place on the Tigers roster, the club purchased the contract of infielder Warren Morris from Triple A Toledo.

Pena has been sidelined since departing the Tigers game against the Indians on Tuesday, May 27, with the exception of a pinch-hitting appearance on Sunday, June 1 versus the New York Yankees. In 49 games in 2003, he is hitting .235 (38x162) with six home runs and 20 RBI.

Morris was hitting .278 (57x205) with 13 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 19 RBI for the Mud Hens in 55 games. Morris has seen action at the major league level in each of the past four seasons with Pittsburgh (1999-2001) and Minnesota (2002). In 343 career major league games, he is hitting .265 (305x1149). Morris is expected to be in uniform today for the Tigers and wearing jersey number 24.

To create a spot on the Tigers 40-man roster for Morris, infielder Dean Palmer was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

An additional move was also announced by the club, the contract of left-handed pitcher Andy Van Hekken has been transferred from Toledo to Double A Erie.
