In March of 1999, just two months before our Mom passed away from Alzheimer's Disease, I read an article about the connection between Alzheimer's and Down Syndrome.
Here I was losing my Mom to this disease, and then I read that my brother could have the same thing just because he was born with Down Syndrome! I cried, screamed, got angry, and then turned to my computer for answers. Unfortunately, as many of you already know, those answers are very difficult to find.
I scoured the internet and medical libraries looking for information about the connection. What I did find was a paragraph here and there, or if I was lucky enough to find an article, you needed nothing short of a PhD to understand it.
I took all the info I could find, and created my first website, which was hosted by TalkCity. It was online until August 8, 2002 when TalkCity declared bankruptcy and took my website off the internet without warning.
From May 20, 2000 until August 8, 2002, my website provided information and comfort to over 10,000 individuals all over the world. This is not a disease that is going away, and it reaches all walks of life.
Knowing how many people my old site has helped has brought me to this point- rebuilding what was lost. I would love to sit here and say that I had the old site all backed-up, but I didn't. It was one of those things that I never got around to doing. I do have some of it saved, so I am not having to start from scratch. This is a labor of love. I get nothing for having it here. Just the satisfaction that the greatest tool to confront any difficulty is knowledge.
This site is for you, the caregivers.
