Hobbes, Thomas (1588-1679), An English philosopher who is best known for his book Leviathan. Hobbes' perspective on human nature was pessimistic and he argued that the natural state of human affairs was one of constant struggle and violence - something which a strong government is able to overcome. Hobbes stated in the Leviathan that in the state of nature, "...every man is enemy to every man, the same consequent to the time wherein men live without other security than what their own strength and their own invention shall furnish them withal. In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth;..." Hobbes goes on to state that human life without government,"...is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

Locke, John (Philosopher 1632-1704) Locke's views, in his Second Treaties on Civil Government (1690), attacked the theory of divine right of kings and the nature of the state as conceived by the English philosopher and political theorist Thomas Hobbes. Moreover, Locke argued that sovereignty did not reside in the state but with the people, and that the state is supreme, but only if it is bound by civil and what he called “natural” law. Many of Locke's political ideas, such as natural rights (life, liberty, & property), and the duty of the government to protect these rights were later embodied in the U.S. Constitution.

Paine, Thomas (1737–1809) wrote Common Sense which was written for the common man on the streets. It explained the abuses of the King of England against the American Colonies. The pamplet ignited the American Revolution and set the foundation for the Declaration of Independance.

The U.S. Constitution was drawn up by 55 delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia 1787, and later ratified in 1788. The Constitution defines distinct powers for the Congress of the United States, the president, and the federal courts. This division of authority is known as a system of checks and balances, and it ensures that none of the branches of government can dominate the others. The Constitution also establishes and limits the authority of the federal government over the states and spells out freedoms and liberties for U.S. citizens, many of these are in the Bill of Rights. Many of the Core Democratic Values that our country holds dear, can be found in our constitution and the bill of rights.
