Another Letter from Mother
(The Ball Game)
I'm writing now to let you know
I'll be down for a spell
I went to a 'doggone' ball game
and things didn't go too well
I'd never been to a stadium before
So this notion rose up in me
This is the day that I will go
And a live ball game I'd see
There came a boy right thru the crowd
Yelling much too loud
'Popcorn, cokes and candy bars'
He sure stirred up the crowd
About the time I turned around
With intent to buy a coke
some 'drunk nut' pushed that kid
and both of us got soaked
I saw some folks a-fighting
When the batter hit a ball
They all got really nasty
exchanging dirty calls
Now I held my temper down
I was going to catch a ball
If I could only catch one of them
I'd give them all a call
Right about then, someone said
'It's coming right at you'!
So I jumped right up and grabbed at it
like I saw the others do
That 'dadburn' ball was hard as a rock
going at a rocket speed
Some old guy said to me,
'A glove is what you need'
I've got my hand in a cast
and that ball bounced off my head
I've got some patches here and there
But I'm glad that I ain't dead
Love, Mother
