Benji and Precious and Nev, Oh My!

This is more of a ficlet, really. No plot—just an average day for Mich . . .

Mich returned to her room giggling uncharacteristically. Nev looked up from the book he was poring over. “What’s so funny?”

Mich leaned on the door, wiping tears from her eyes. “Benji . . . and Precious . . . oh, I love those two.”

Nev cocked an eyebrow. “Huh?”

Benji and Precious—doggy Mike clones belonging to Michaela and St. Matthew—had quickly gained popularity around the Library. Though he would not have readily admitted it to anyone—not even Nameh, his twin—Nev was secretly afraid that Mich would get one of her own, and then he wouldn’t be her favorite anymore.

“They were outside playing fetch, and I joined in. Those two are quick—and they love to roughhouse. They’re so cute!”

“Cuter than me?” Nev asked mildly, keeping his eyes focused on his book.

Mich stopped giggling. “No, Nev. It’s a different kind of cute. A cute that . . . I’m not ashamed to say I like.”

Nev nodded understandingly. “I see. So . . . you’d like it better if I . . . ” He leaped out of his chair suddenly and pounced on Mich, knocking her to the floor. He barked playfully, nuzzling her with his shaggy head. Mich squealed like a small child. “Hey! Keep doin’ that and I’ll have you fixed!” she teased.

“You do and I’ll be sorry!” Nev said, rolling onto his back and sticking his limbs in the air. “So—do I get the job?”

“Job?” Mich asked, propping herself up on her elbows. “What are you talking about?”

“Well,” Nev said shyly. “I thought that if I act more like Benji or Precious you wouldn’t get one of your own . . . ”

“Nev, listen to me. I could never replace you—you know that. I can go and play with Benji and Precious any time I want—besides, I’m more of a cat person.”

“You mean it?” he asked hopefully.

“Yes. I do,” she replied. “And now that I know you don’t mind acting like a dog . . . ” She trailed off, an evil smile playing across her face.

“Hey, don’t you be getting any ideas,” Nev growled, giving a small ruff in response just as Nameh and BB entered the room.

“I was afraid of that,” BB said sardonically. “He’s finally gone around the bend.”

Now you know what I have to live with . . . ;)
