Our Mission as Boosters is:
****To support the creation of a positive learning environment for all students at West High School.
****To recognize the efforts of students' accomplishments.
****To encourage parent commitment and involvement.
****To boost spirit, cooperation and communication with the Greater Lapeer community.
In that light, we who love craft shows have joined together to make the Lapeer West Art and Craft Show the best show we can for our community. We have the added benefit of being able to buy quality, unique crafts for our own homes.
We visit many other craft shows throughout Southeastern and Mid-Michigan to discover crafters whose work we enjoy. We then invite them to our show. All the Boosters collect contact information for crafters whom we feel would make a positive addition to our show, and a detailed database is maintained. This is a year-round effort.
Invitations and applications for our show are mailed several times a year. Each crafter must be juried and accepted by the entire jury committee. We all have different tastes and preferences, but the main criteria is quality, hand-crafted items. Our intent is to host the finest artists and crafters who do their own work and avoid vendors who buy/sell their items. Each year, the caliber of crafters at our art and craft show has increased.
There are 90 spaces available, and we usually have 70 to 80 crafters at the show. We try to provide a variety of items so we try to limit the number of exhibits in any one category. This ensures the crafters who participate in our show have an opportunity to highlight their products as unique.
The Boosters also arrange for advertising for the crafters and the craft shows by contacting local and regional newspapers, bazaar guides, shopper guides, radio stations, and local TV showˇ¦s public service announcements. We work hard to obtain free advertisement, but we also purchase ads in regional newspapers in three counties and a statewide craft show magazine to announce our show. We have continuous advertisements on Channel 18, the school districtˇ¦s cable channel. Road signs are placed around town the week prior to the show by volunteer parents.
The senior class parents host the Project Graduation Bake Sale to raise money for graduation events. This brings parents who donate baked goods and stay for the craft show.
Our Boosters manage the Panther Pantry concession stand during the show. We provide coffee and donuts in the morning, and we sell lunch for the crafters and shoppers during the show.
Honor Society students are available to help the crafters unload before the show, set up, and then reload after the show. This helps the students fulfill community service requirements and helps crafters as well.
