St Willigis
Written and researched by Margaret Odrowaz-Sypniewski

St. Willigis's feast day is February 23rd. Willigis was born in Hildesheim, Germany. Later on he was the Canon at Hildeshiem. Emperor Otto II made Willigis Imperial Chaplain and later (in 975) he also appointed him Archbishop of Mainz.

Otto II died of a fever and Willigis crowned Otto II's son as the new emperor. Empress Theophane and Willigis ruled jointly until the boy (Otto III) came of age. Willigis was the boy's religious advisor. In 1002, Otto II died at age 22 years. Otto III left no heirs, so Duke Henry of Bavaria ruled as Henry II.

Willigius began to reconstruct the church at Mainz, but he died before it was completed.
