Dear Classmates: It is with great regret that I will not be able to be with you on the occasion of our 40th Anniversary. Remembering the 25th, at which my wife and I were awarded a St. Christopher's medal for have traveled the farthest to attend, and realizing that we might not see each other again after this date, pulls at my heartstrings. Every now and again I find our high school yearbook. We are caught in amber, there. Some of us have passed on such as Mike Hayden who, along with Carole Haggerty and Kathy Watson was an important part of our 'crew'. Others, such as Joe Schmoke, I have corresponded with through the Internet and find they have fashioned wonderful lives. Our class go-getters, like Rose Bartos Nagy, Marcia Pesto Sack, JoAnn Soper O'Mara, Joni Wichtman Mastropietro, Fred Ream, and Joe Schmoke, still are showing leadership. I reflect on the fact that we had the best of educations even though we did not have all the riches and frills of other schools. Our teachers were brilliant and fearless (we were a little ratty, bratty, and moody, at times!). Our fellow students, being from all parts of the city, were a miniature melting pot and teaching us tolerance and understanding. Even now, in my teaching, I have chance to quote the line at the head of the stairs, hurriedly glanced after each of my Physics classes but, nevertheless, making an impression: "Knowledge is Power." I often think of you. Each time I get in my truck, there is my St. Christopher's medal from my friends at St. Tony's Love to you all. Bill |
