- Ray Kettel writes "Currently
my work has become my hobby. In January,
I received as a gift from the Grand
Rapids Public Library, about 4000
children's books, some dating before the
Civil War period. The collection began in
1905 by a children's librarian, May
Quigley, who retired in 1943 from the
Grand Rapids Public Library. I have
developed a new course on the Dearborn
campus of the University of Michigan
where these books are being read for the
first time in decades. There was a
feature article on my project in the
Detroit News, page 3 D, Monday, June 17,
2002. Although I do not have the article
online, I do have other information about
the project that I can send to those who
