My PMU Foal Montana

Welcome to Montana's Photo Album. Montana is a PMU Foal that I was able to adopt here in Alberta. PMU stands for Pregnant Mares Urine, which is used in a drug called Premarin. Premarin is a hormone replacement drug that some women must take in menopause. The mares are bred each year for their urine and once the foals are born and approx. 4-5 months old they are sent to slaughter. A wonderful group called PMU FoalQuest (www.pmufoalquest.com) saves some of these foals which are then adopted.

Once the foals are born in May, PMU Foalquest goes out to take pictures of these foals and posts them on their website. Once you qualify to adopt a foal, you get to pick from the pictures which foal will be yours. Here is the picture that I chose Montana from, she was 2 months old:

I was lucky enough to be able to visit the PMU farm where Montana was born with Jan, founder of PMU FoalQuest. It was a beautiful August day and we were able to see the herd and take pics of Montana. These is one of the first pictures I took of her, she was 3 months old:

The only time we saw her without her mom

September 2001 - Once the foals are old enough, the farmers bring the mares and foals in where they are separated. FoalQuest goes to the farms and helps with this huge process, and then takes the foals that have been adopted with them. There were over 500 foals adopted in the 2001 season. Once they get to Jan's place, they are haltered, vet checked, blood work taken, and paperwork is completed before they can be shipped to their new homes. I was able to spend some time both before the foals arrived and once they were all at the farm. I was able to get a few pictures of Montana there. She was still not trusting enough to come near me but was very interested in the camera...

This is Montana at 4 months old:

Haltered and ready to go home today!

Bringing Montana home was very interesting. She was still not trusting humans (they did take her from her mom). Once we got to the farm, she was quarentined for 3 weeks to ensure that she did not have anything contageous for the other foals she would spend her time with. This was her first night in a stall...she really was not impressed with us now:

Starting to trust humans (we do feed her) - 5 months old

6 months - She is now coming right over to the fence, she loves humans now!

7 months - Growing like a weed!
