Princess
[added February 25, 1998...written by Ellie]
When first I saw her, Princess was laying on a cold cement floor, having nothing between her protruding bones and the cold floor. Her body was skin stretched tightly over bones. Her 10 - 1 week old puppies lay whining and scooting their tiny bodies close by her. I opened the gate and stepped into her kennel. She slowly got to her feet, and, though unsteady, carefully stepped over her pups, walked to me and sat down leaning her body and head against my leg looking directly into my eyes with eyes full of pain, suffering and hunger---Her look was so intense it startled me. If tears could have flowed from her eyes they would have flooded the kennel. In my 30 years of working with unwanted, throw away animals, I have never seen such a pitiful, pathetic, pleading look in the eyes of a broken animal. I knew when I left her that day I had to try to find a way to help her.
With great reluctance the shelter manager finally agreed to give me a few days to try to find her a foster home. He insisted she, herself, was not placeable. I then was told some of the things the owners had said when they brought her in....How when the man would approach her, she would squat and urinate (showing submission)...and he would whip her for it. How she wouldn't stay out of the garbage.....but obviously that was the only way she got anything to eat. She just was not a good dog..........That was not what I saw.
Arriving home I frantically searched the internet for help, pleading for a temporary home. I don't know if I really thought I would find one. Who's going to take a Mother and 10 pups? With God's help all is possible. In 5 days I had a foster home for all of them. When Princess left the Idaho shelter we were all told that if she has to be brought back she will immediately be killed having no chance at finding a home. We heard the words....We knew he meant them....but, at least for now, we knew they were all safe. This was Nov. 10 of last year.
With loving care of the foster home (in Spokane, Washington) the pups were raised-----all are now in loving homes. Princess has taken another 2 months to regain her weight and to get her strength back, but she's now ready for a new home. Two local Rescue groups have tried to help find her a home---no takers----she's been advertised several times----no response. She is still waiting....time is running out. If a place cannot be found soon her only alternative will be to go back to the shelter and a death sentence.
Princess is a 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd, now weighing about 60#, looks purebred but one never knows for sure without papers, whose 1st year of life has been filled with misery and pain. All she needs is someone to love and belong to...........and to be loved. Is someone out there the happy ending to this story?
If anyone can offer Princess a loving home, please let Ellie know immediately, as Princess has little time.
Caroline and her puppies
[added February 21, 1998]
Caroline was dumped at a Virginia shelter, pregnant, without a hope in the world. She was just about ready to deliver, so spaying was not an option. Caoline is a beautiful, small, young buff female American Cocker Spaniel. The shelter was going to euthanize her, as is common when pregnant females are brought in. She is now being fostered in Fairfax, Virginia with her puppies, but the foster is packed with other dogs. Caroline needs a quieter atmosphere, and her fosters really need relief. There are two male and four female puppies. Two are chocolate, two black and white, and two black. We want to give them the best chance to survive. Please help because, as you might imagine, no one is lining up with offers.
If anyone can offer assistance, please let Valerie Macys know immediately.
