Joseph was born February 27, 1899 at Volga, South Dakota to Jonas and Bergitte (Gudmundson) Larson. He moved with his family to Balsam Lake, Wisconsin and then to Mabel in 1910. "I was going to the Mabel school here when it burned down. After high school, I attended the LaCrosse (Wisconsin) Business University," said Joseph Larson, Sr. He married Palma Danielson (left) October 31, 1929, in a ceremony performed by Rev. A. O. Johnson at Spring Grove. She was born July 27, 1906 at Spring Grove the daughter of Daniel and Eliza Danielson. To this union 4 children were born; Beverly (Mrs. Ralph Holmes), Dororthy (Mrs. Ira Brandenburg), Phyllis (Mrs. Jessie Emery), and Joseph Paul Larson, Jr. He owned and operated Larson Hardware Store in Mabel since 1921. They were both a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church. She was a member of its ALCW. He was a former member of the board of directors of Wisco Wholesale Hardware Co. of Madison, Wis. He was a member of the Mabel Business Association, and a charter member. She had been a resident of Mabel all her married life. They are both buried in the Mabel Lutheran cemetery.
