(abbreviated and revised)
Hitting The Ball
All players must play right handed. This rule is totally unfair! Thus, we do allow lefties to play. This makes the game alot more interesting and challenging.
The ball may only be intentionally struck by a mallet when the frame of the rider's bike has been parallel to the sideline for at least 21 feet (three
bike lengths). The "parallel to the sideline" rule totally sucks! and slows down the play dramatically. Therefore, we do not play this way. The ball can be hit any which way possible
as long as it's done safely, with the mallet and without a foot touching the ground (see below).
Right Of Way
A player's right-of-way must be respected! Right -of-way is established when one player has approached the ball on his or her right (or left if lefties are playing).
Veering
Veering occurs when a player fails to establish or maintain a position parallel to the sidelines before intentionally striking the ball. If veering is called the other team takes
over from the spot of the infraction. We do not play with this rule. We allow ball handling and veering in any direction as long as it's done safely i.e. avoiding collisions
with other players.
Contact
We try and avoid contact of any kind with an opposing player or bike. We do allow some leaning to steer the opponent towards the sidelines. Knocking the opposing
player's mallet to make them drop or miss the ball is allowed.
Foot Position
A players foot must remain on or in the pedals at all times. If a player's foot touches the ground, that player must clear the area of play and cannot touch the ball until
another player touches it. A player may not hit the ball while his or her foot is on the ground.
Start Of Play
Each chukkar is started by a "joust" A joust is when one player designated by his/her respective team, sets-up in the goal to sprint to a ball placed at the center of the
field. The sprinters take start on the command of the referee. We have NEVER played with a ref. Thus the "honor" system applies to all our games.
