CLASS 73
The class 73 is a southern based loco which either runs off 3rd rail 750 volt DC or it's little deisel engine. The class 73 is used on many things, and a RA number of 6 gives it a wide scope on where it can go. The engine itself can operate in two modes, and depending on where it is it can give an ETH index of 66, but this can only be done when it is using the 3rd rail power supply and not running of it's diesel engine.
Supply system 660-750 volt DC from third rail
Engine English electric 4SRKT 447 KW at 850 RPM
Weight 76 tonnes
ETH 66 (electric mode only)
Mutiple working (electric within class or with Southern EMU's) Diesel Blue star
Max speed 73/0 Electric 80 MPH Diesel 60 MPH
Max speed 73/1 Electric 90 MPH Diesel 60 MPH
Max speed 73/2* Electric 90 MPH Diesel 60 MPH
* The class 73/2 is just the same as the class 73/1 except to make the sector easier to manage, the Gatwick express trains came under the 73/2 heading and have modified Mk 2f coaches, and a old EMU which was split from the other end of the set and placed on the end, as this also draws power and also allows the driver to drive the train and not have to turn the loco around.

The class 73 is designed to be either versatile for the south although it has been used on p-way work in the north, the only problem is that the 73's dont carry that much fuel with them, as they are intended to use thrid rail power instead.
The class 73 is used on pullman duties around the south of London, as third rail is comon in that area. Class 73101 "Royal Alex" used to be called the "Royal Argus". It is in pullman colours at present.
