This is my section of the page dedicated to my all-time favorite cat in CATS, Munkustrap. I first encountered this wonderful character when I saw CATS on tour in Wichita Falls, TX for the first time. This large, grey tabby cat stuck out from all the others.( At least to me) I searched through my playbill to see what his character's name was. I couldn't exactly figure it out at first...seeing as how he didn't have a song of his own. ( Although he SHOULD!) I spent the intire intermission trying to narrow down the suspects of who this mystery tabby was. I finally narrowed it down...and then decided that his name was Munkustrap. This brilliant character was played so well. It was extremely hard to take your eyes off of him, because he was so interesting to watch. His mannerisms are a complete mixture of any you might find a cat to have. He was serious at times, warning the playful kittens if they were getting too rowdy. He was protective at times, when Macavity came...he put his life on the line for his beloved tribe. He was playfull, and almost goofy a few times too, with his facial expressions and overdramatic disappointments.
In the show...Munkustrap is the one who informs the crowd about WHAT is going on. He tells the audience about how Old Deuteronomy comes to the Jellicle Ball, a celebration celebrated by Jellicles once a year, and decides to pic one Jellicle to go to the Heavyside Layer ( or "Heaviside Layer"...depending on how you want to spell it. Both ways are correct) Munkustrap also asembles a play for Old Deuteronomy, with all of the CATS as his actors. The play is called:" The Aweful Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles". In this play, the CATS all dress up like dogs ( Two sides of dogs, the girl cats play the "pekes", which are bulldogs, pugs, etc. And the guys play the "pollicles", which are Yorkshire Terries, Scottie dogs, and others) Munkustrap narrates the story magnificently. Even when one of his actors gives him a hard time ( the Great Rumpus Cat), Munkustrap continues on with the show.
FACTS
In the movie of CATS, Munkustrap's mate is Demeter.
In the NY production, it varies...no one really knows who his mate is. But we do know that in the NY version, Demeter is Alonzo's mate.
In the USA tour of CATS, Jellylorum is Munkustrap's mate.
Some people believe Cassandra, or Bombalurina, or Victoria, or Jennyanydots is his mate, along with the others actually proved in the shows. If you want my opinion...I truly have no idea. I think that's something that "Munkustrap" would like to keep a secret... and let the audience try to figure it out.

The talented actor, Michael Gruber, portraying Munkustrap in the movie version of CATS. Mr. Gruber also played Munkustrap at Winter Garden Theater in NY.
